Originally, we started running apprenticeships as part of a talent pipeline. The really important thing for us as an organization is that our apprentices are given the opportunity to grow and learn on the job.

The main skills that apprentices learn and hone are communication, adaptability, and resilience. They need to take feedback on board. We see them taking on responsibilities within their teams and becoming an integral part of those teams. They help hold things together and are key to their teams’ success. They are truly essential to the business.

We view our apprentices as our future partners and leaders within the organization. The apprenticeship provides a strong foundation of knowledge about both the job and our firm, and we see it as an investment in the firm’s future.

After completing the apprenticeship, apprentices have moved into a variety of roles. They have the opportunity to diversify and move into different areas of the business. The Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship is not specifically tailored to the legal profession, but our training provider includes a legal component for us. The core content is transferable across many businesses, so it works very well.

This year, 80% of my apprentices earned distinctions. I think the apprenticeship provides a strong talent pipeline of people who will grow with the organization, understand the firm, and understand the work they are doing.

It offers organizations a real benefit because apprentices understand not only the role at hand, but also the firm’s structure and how its people work together.
