Engaging content helps students understand and apply key concepts

Learning objectives called out at the beginning of each chapter, in related sections, and in the chapter summary help reinforce students' reading and learning.
Theory into Practice boxes, several of which have been newly revised, help students understand and apply communication concepts and strategies to enhance their public speaking competence. Many include interactive opportunities that allow students to focus on one aspect at a time, to listen to audio excerpts, or to walk through an example that illustrates the concept.
Key Points boxes throughout the book reinforce instruction and aid student review. They summarize important material and offer helpful guidelines throughout the public speaking process. Many are accompanied by interactive quizzes that students can use to review and interpret concepts.
Ethical Decisions boxes deepen students' understanding of the difficult choices speakers and listeners can face. These boxes, several new to this edition, present cases in brief and ask students to choose between controversial courses of action. Thought-provoking questions follow each scenario, providing springboards for classroom debates and opportunities for students to reflect via journaling activities.
Speaking with Confidence boxes with audio (several new to this edition) feature the stories of real students from public speaking classes throughout the country who explain how this text helped them build their confidence in public speaking.
Sample speeches appear in selected chapters and in Appendix E as models for students to learn from or critique. Audio and/or video components accompany several of these sample speeches.

Dynamic content brings concepts to life

Videos and interactives integrated directly into the narrative get students learning actively, making it more likely that they'll retain what they've read.
- Video clips of sample speeches (such as Barack Obama's Tucson memorial speech) and expert advice throughout the narrative boost mastery. Many of these videos are accompanied by video self-checks that enable students to test their knowledge.
- Video galleries illuminate aspects of key topics such as successful central ideas and exclusive and inclusive language.
- Throughout the text, inline audio excerpts highlight effective speech examples. Students can listen to these clips while they read, which reinforces learning in a way that a printed text cannot. Many of these excerpts are from student speeches, while other new samples are from famous speeches, like FDR's fireside chats.
- Author Audio: Final Words of Encouragement features at the end of each chapter showcase author Daniel Mansson's personal and professional anecdotes (including his experiences of taking the introductory speech course as an ESL student) to help students grow on their journey to improve their speaking skills.
Embedded assessments afford students regular opportunities to check their understanding. The results enable instructors to gauge student comprehension and provide timely feedback to address learning gaps along the way.
Writing assignments, such as journaling prompts, shared writing activities, and essays, enable educators to foster and assess critical thinking without significantly impacting their grading burden.  
Video quizzes offer students opportunities to further their knowledge by applying concepts and testing their understanding. Instructors can share videos accompanied by time-stamped multiple-choice questions.
Shared media makes it easy for instructors and students to post and respond to videos and other media. Students can also record and upload their own presentations for grading, comments, or peer review.
The Revel^® mobile app lets students read and practice anywhere, anytime, on any device, online and off. It syncs work across all registered devices automatically, allowing learners to toggle between phone, tablet, and laptop as they move through their day.
The audio playlist lets students listen and learn as they go.

The enhanced grades view provides detailed insights on student performance, from specific assignments to individual student scores.
