Highlights of the DIGITAL UPDATE (available for Fall 2021 classes)

UPDATED - Adaptive Pathways, an exclusive personalized learning tool, help students stay on track when learning about the most difficult concepts. New to the Digital Update, instructors can now assign Adaptive Pathways for points for grade or participation. Integrated throughout the digital narrative, this dynamic assessment and instructional content identifies student misconceptions in real time and guides students to better understanding, preparing them for deeper-level class interactions. Each of the 36 Adaptive Pathways begins with a multiple-choice pinpoint question written to specifically target a common misconception.

If students answer the question correctly, they automatically proceed to a pinpoint question on the next misconception, keeping them on pace to move through the chapter.
However, if students answers incorrectly, they receive a brief targeted video that addresses the specific misconception. After the student has watched the targeted video, a follow-up question will be presented. The follow-up questions are different from the pinpoint questions but assess the same content and are similar in level of difficulty.
Each pinpoint question, targeted video, and follow-up question was empirically tested by the authors to confirm its efficacy. And robust instructor resources, like videos of sample in-class activities, an Annotated Instructor's Edition with teaching notes, and Adaptive Pathways results data, help instructors make effective use of class time with students.

An innovative and empirically based approach helps students master the most difficult concepts

A focus on the most difficult concepts has informed the creation of this innovative digital learning environment. Authors Danae Hudson and Brooke Whisenhunt, both instructors at Missouri State University, evaluated years of performance data to identify where students struggled the most in each chapter. They discovered that students found the same topics to be challenging semester after semester. They identified these as the "most difficult concepts" (MDCs) and focused on ways to help students overcome these predictable challenges. The authors then dug further to uncover the most common misconceptions that cause students to struggle with these concepts.
Piecing it Together chapter-closing modules take an in-depth look at one current topic in psychology through the lens of the four cross-cutting themes recommended by the APA working group on Introductory Psychology: cultural and social diversity, ethics, research methodology, and variations in human functioning. Each Piecing it Together feature includes narrative text, interactive activities, and writing prompts to help students integrate these themes in the context of the key topic at hand, helping students learn to synthesize chapter content through a variety of perspectives.

Dynamic content brings concepts to life

Videos and interactives integrated directly into the narrative get students learning actively, making it more likely that they'll retain what they've read.
Embedded assessments afford students regular opportunities to check their understanding. The results enable instructors to gauge student comprehension and provide timely feedback to address learning gaps along the way.
Writing assignments, such as journaling prompts, shared writing activities, and essays, enable educators to foster and assess critical thinking without significantly impacting their grading burden.  
Video quizzes offer students opportunities to further their knowledge by applying concepts and testing their understanding. Instructors can share videos accompanied by time-stamped multiple-choice questions.
Shared media makes it easy for instructors and students to post and respond to videos and other media. Students can also record and upload their own presentations for grading, comments, or peer review.
The Revel^® mobile app lets students read and practice anywhere, anytime, on any device, online and off. It syncs work across all registered devices automatically, allowing learners to toggle between phone, tablet, and laptop as they move through their day.
The audio playlist lets students listen and learn as they go.

Actionable insights and enriching instructor resources help improve results

The Adaptive Pathways global results dashboard empowers educators to monitor class assignment completion and see how students perform on each of the Adaptive Pathways. The trending column reveals whether students' grades are improving or declining, and Adaptive Pathways global results data provides instructors with a quick snapshot of student performance on difficult concepts, allowing them to tailor their class time to address student needs.
In order to help instructors make the most of this innovative learning environment, the authors created videos depicting a variety of activities that are suited for different classroom modalities (e.g., small class, large class, online class) for each concept addressed in an Adaptive Pathway.
The Annotated Instructor's Edition offers a variety of teaching tips, authored by teaching expert Dr. Melissa Beers from The Ohio State University, located within the margins of the content.
LMS integration provides institutions, instructors, and students easy access to their Revel courses via Blackboard Learn^™, Canvas^™, Brightspace by D2L^™, and Moodle^™. Single sign-on lets students access Revel on their first day.
