The goal of LeMone and Burke's Medical-Surgical Nursing is to provide students with a strong knowledge base, an understanding of contemporary practice issues in Australia and the capacity for sound clinical reasoning, to help them to excel as a nurse.
Emphasising a person-centred philosophy whereby the person who is the recipient of care is seen as an integral member of the team and consideration of their needs and wishes is paramount
Fostering critical-thinking and clinical reasoning skills as the basis for safe clinical practice and nursing excellence
Recognising the nurse’s role as an essential member of the interprofessional healthcare team
This easily understood, straightforward Australian text uses effective design principles and learning strategies such as advanced organisers, special features, colourful illustrations and critical-thinking exercises to help students transfer their learning to practice.
The concept of culturally competent nursing is introduced with particular attention to the culture and history of Indigenous peoples in Australia.
Throughout the text, information is presented that highlights the importance of acknowledging the dignity, culture, values, beliefs and rights of people from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
The evidence-based Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) is referred to throughout this text and will help students focus on the skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to safe and effective patient care.
The knowledge and skill statements included in the PSCF were structured with reference to Miller’s pyramid of competence to demonstrate how knowledge translates to practice.
