MyLab Accounting contributes to student success
In Spring 2017, Pearson partnered with Mary Keener, professor at the University of Tampa in Tampa, FL, to investigate the impact of MyLab™ Accounting with Intermediate Accounting by Gordon, Raedy, and Sannella on student success in her Intermediate Accounting course.
Key findings include:
- Average exam, final exam, and final course scores improved after implementation of MyLab Accounting.
- Students earning MyLab homework scores above the median earned higher average in-class assignment, exam, and final course grades than students who scored below the median on MyLab homework scores.

Why does Professor Mary Keener utilize MyLab Accounting?
Keener changed her course textbook for Spring 2016, and this created an opportunity to implement online homework that would keep her students accountable for their own learning outside the classroom. After researching options, she found MyLab Accounting to be the best fit and adopted it for her Spring 2016 classes.
How was MyLab Accounting implemented?
Intermediate Accounting is a 400- level, four-credit course and is the first semester of a two-semester sequence. MyLab Accounting is required and used for homework assignments and additional practice. Keener creates her MyLab homework assignments using end-of-chapter problems. There is one assignment per week that is comprised of five multi-part, algorithmic questions. Students have three attempts at completion and learning aids are turned on.
In addition, Keener encourages her students to use the optional study aids in MyLab including the Dynamic Study Modules (DSM) as preparation for class or review before exams. MyLab homework accounts for 10% of the total course grade.
Were students successful in the course?
Students were divided into two groups based on the median MyLab homework score.
- Students scoring above the median on MyLab homework earned average in-class assignment scores 14 percentage points and 12 percentage points higher on average exam scores than students who scored below the median.
Further, average final course scores increased four percentage points.
Did students like using MyLab Accounting?
Responses from the Fall 2016 end-of-semester, voluntary survey of Keener’s students indicate that the majority of responding students recognize the value of MyLab Accounting.
- 89 percent of students strongly agree or agree that their understanding of the course material increased because of using MyLab.
- 79 percent of students strongly agree or agree that the use of MyLab positively impacted their exam scores.
One student said:
“The [learning] aids and practice study questions really broke down the problems from every angle and gave me a way to understand rather than just memorize.”
