  • Beta Sheet

Structure formed by two or more beta strands arranged side by side, creating a zigzag pattern stabilized by hydrogen bonds.
  • Beta Strand

Linear segment of polypeptide that aligns with others to form a sheet, depicted as arrows pointing toward the C-terminal end.
  • Beta Pleated Sheet

Zigzag arrangement of strands with alternating R groups perpendicular to the sheet plane, also known as beta sheet.
  • Hydrogen Bond

Interaction stabilizing sheets, forming either between separate chains or within the same chain, unlike in helices.
  • Interchain

Type of sheet where stabilizing bonds form between strands on different polypeptide chains.
  • Intrachain

Type of sheet where stabilizing bonds form between strands within a single polypeptide chain.
  • Polypeptide Chain

Sequence of amino acids that can form strands and sheets, either continuous or separate in sheet formation.
  • R Group

Side chain of amino acids that alternates up and down, perpendicular to the sheet plane in pleated structures.
  • C Terminal

End of a polypeptide chain toward which strand arrows point, indicating directionality in sheet diagrams.
  • Alpha Helix

Secondary structure forming only intrachain bonds, contrasting with sheets that allow interchain bonding.
  • Phi Angle

Bond angle plotted on the x-axis of Ramachandran plots, characteristic for sheet conformations.
  • Psi Angle

Bond angle plotted on the y-axis of Ramachandran plots, helping define sheet structure.
  • Ramachandran Plot

Graphical representation of phi and psi angles, with sheet conformations located in the upper left quadrant.
  • Parallel Beta Sheet

Sheet type where strands run in the same direction, with distinct bond angle locations on Ramachandran plots.
  • Antiparallel Beta Sheet

Sheet type where strands run in opposite directions, distinguishable by bond angles in Ramachandran plots.
