Question 1

Which of the following best describes the principle of natural selection as proposed by Darwin and Wallace?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to survive and reproduce, increasing the frequency of those traits in the population.

Question 2

A paleontologist discovers a fossilized footprint in a rock layer. Which type of fossil evidence is this, and what does it most directly provide information about?

Accepted Answer

It is a trace fossil, providing information about the organism's behavior and movement.

Question 3

Which of the following is the best example of homologous structures?

Accepted Answer

The wings of a bat and the flippers of a dolphin, both derived from a common tetrapod ancestor.

Question 4

Why are vestigial structures, such as the hind limb bones in whales, considered evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

They are remnants of structures that were functional in ancestral species, showing descent with modification.

Question 5

Which scenario best illustrates artificial selection?

Accepted Answer

Humans breeding dogs for specific traits such as size or coat color.

Question 6

A population of snails shows a wide variety of shell colors and patterns. What evolutionary concept does this illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Variation within a population, which is necessary for natural selection to act.

Question 7

Which of the following statements about analogous structures is correct?

Accepted Answer

They have similar function but evolved independently in different lineages.

Question 8

Embryological similarities among vertebrates, such as gill slits and tails, provide evidence for which evolutionary concept?

Accepted Answer

Common ancestry among vertebrates.

Question 9

Comparing DNA sequences between humans and mice reveals many similarities. What does this molecular evidence suggest?

Accepted Answer

Humans and mice share a common ancestor.

Question 10

Which of the following best explains why wisdom teeth are considered vestigial structures in humans?

Accepted Answer

They are remnants of teeth used by ancestral humans for a tougher diet.

Question 11

A population of tawny owls has evolved lighter coloration over several decades as winters have become milder. What evolutionary mechanism is most likely responsible for this change?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection favoring lighter coloration in a changing environment.

Question 12

Which scientist is most closely associated with the idea that species change over time due to gradual geological processes?

Accepted Answer

Hutton

Question 13

Which of the following is an example of evolution by natural selection in response to a new environmental pressure?

Accepted Answer

Crickets evolving to become silent when their calls attract parasites.

Question 14

Which of the following best describes the fossil record's contribution to our understanding of evolution?

Accepted Answer

It provides evidence of gradual changes in species over time.

Question 15

Which equation can be used to calculate the frequency of alleles in a population under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 16

If a population of birds on an island evolves different beak shapes to exploit different food sources, what evolutionary process is this an example of?

Accepted Answer

Adaptive radiation

Question 17

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for natural selection to occur?

Accepted Answer

All individuals must survive and reproduce equally

Question 18

Which of the following best explains why the wings of a damselfly and a swallow are considered analogous structures?

Accepted Answer

They evolved independently for the same function (flight) in unrelated lineages.

Question 19

Which of the following is a direct result of artificial selection, as seen in the diversity of dog breeds?

Accepted Answer

Selection for specific traits by humans, leading to a wide variety of breeds.

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the significance of molecular similarities (such as DNA sequence comparisons) in evolutionary biology?

Accepted Answer

They allow scientists to infer evolutionary relationships and estimate divergence times.
