General Chemistry II (CH 222HZ) Syllabus and Course Overview

Course Structure and Content

This course, General Chemistry II (CH 222HZ), is designed for college students continuing their study of chemistry. It builds upon foundational concepts from General Chemistry I and covers advanced topics relevant to the general chemistry curriculum. The course includes lectures, online activities, and assignments, totaling approximately 120 hours for 4 credits.

  • Prerequisite: Completion of General Chemistry I (CH 221Z or equivalent) with a grade of C- or better.

  • Required Materials: Tro, Chemistry Structure and Properties, 3rd ed., Pearson Education (textbook), Modified Mastering Chemistry Access Code, scientific calculator.

Weekly Topics and Chapters

The course is organized by weekly modules, each focusing on a specific chapter from the textbook. The topics align closely with the general chemistry curriculum:

  • Week 1-2: Chapter 9 - Thermochemistry

  • Week 3-4: Chapter 10 - Gases

  • Week 5: Chapter 11 – Liquids, Solids, and Intermolecular Forces

  • Week 6: Chapter 13 - Solutions

  • Week 7-8: Chapter 14 – Chemical Kinetics

  • Week 9-10: Chapter 15 – Chemical Equilibrium

These chapters cover essential topics such as states of matter, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, kinetics, equilibrium, and solution chemistry.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Apply stoichiometry to problems involving reactions, gases, liquids, solutions, thermochemistry, kinetics, and equilibrium.

  • Use kinetic molecular theory and gas laws to predict gas behavior under various conditions.

  • Identify and apply types of intermolecular forces to physical properties of solids, liquids, and solutions.

  • Describe solution concepts and factors affecting solution properties.

  • Determine effects of different factors on chemical reaction rates and understand catalysis.

  • Explain thermal energy transfer and energy changes in chemical and physical processes using thermochemistry concepts.

  • Identify and use appropriate equations related to gas laws, solutions, colligative properties, thermochemistry, kinetics, and equilibrium.

Evaluation and Grading

Student performance is evaluated through a combination of quizzes, homework, participation, exams, and reflection assignments. The grading scale is as follows:

Assignments and Exams

  • Pre-Assessment: Evaluates current chemistry knowledge; graded on completion.

  • Introductory Quiz: Covers syllabus and course orientation.

  • Pre-Class Quizzes: Prepare students for each class; lowest three scores dropped.

  • Weekly Quizzes: Two attempts allowed; higher score recorded; lowest score dropped.

  • Participation: Collaborative group activities and Poll Everywhere responses; lowest three scores dropped.

  • Exam Wrappers: Reflection assignments after midterms; graded on completion.

  • Homework: Completed via Mastering Chemistry; full credit for 85% or higher total points.

  • Midterm Exams: Two in-person exams; group portion can only improve grade.

  • Final Exam: Cumulative, covers all course material; must be completed to earn a non-F grade.
