Solution
A uniform mixture of two or more substances where individual components cannot be visually distinguished.
Homogeneous Mixture
A blend of substances with a consistent composition throughout, making different parts indistinguishable.
Solute
The smaller component in a mixture that becomes dispersed within another substance.
Solvent
The larger component in a mixture that enables other substances to disperse within it.
Concentration
A measure indicating how much of a substance is present within a specific amount of mixture.
Suspension
A non-uniform mixture with large particles that can float and eventually settle due to gravity.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A blend where individual components remain distinct and can often be visually separated.
Colloid
A uniform mixture with intermediate-sized particles that remain evenly distributed and do not settle.
Particle Size
A distinguishing feature of mixtures, with values affecting whether components settle or stay suspended.
Nanometer
A unit of length used to describe the size of particles in mixtures, especially in colloids and suspensions.
Italian Salad Dressing
A common example of a non-uniform mixture where visible particles float and may settle over time.
Milk
A familiar example of a uniform mixture with suspended particles that never settle, such as fat and proteins.
Casein
A protein found in certain uniform mixtures, remaining suspended and contributing to the mixture's stability.
Fat Particle
A component in some uniform mixtures that stays evenly distributed without settling, as seen in milk.
