  3. Introduction of the recombinant vector into a host cell (e.g., bacterium).

  5. Harvesting and application of the gene product (e.g., protein, enzyme).

Applications: Genetically engineered bacteria can produce human growth hormone, degrade environmental pollutants, or synthesize industrial enzymes for manufacturing.

Recombinant DNA technology offers significant advantages in medicine, agriculture, and industry.

  • Production of Human Growth Hormone (hGH): Genetically engineered E. coli can produce hGH efficiently and safely, replacing the need to extract it from human pituitary glands at autopsy, which was costly and risked disease transmission.

  • Safety and Efficacy: hGH from other animals is not effective in humans, making recombinant production essential.
