Fungi

Definition and General Characteristics

  • Mycology is the study of fungi.

  • Fungi are eukaryotic cells, meaning they possess a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.

  • They are chemoheterotrophs that decompose organic matter for energy and carbon.

  • Most fungi are aerobic or facultative anaerobes, allowing them to survive in various oxygen conditions.

Importance of Fungi

  • Fungi decompose dead organic material, playing a crucial role in nutrient cycling.

  • They recycle elements such as carbon and nitrogen in the environment.

  • Mycorrhizae are symbiotic associations between fungi and plant roots, helping plants absorb water and minerals (especially phosphorus).

Comparing Fungi & Bacteria

  • Fungi are eukaryotic cells; bacteria are prokaryotic.

  • Fungal cell walls contain glucans, mannans, and chitin.

  • Sterols are usually present in fungal membranes, but absent in most bacterial membranes (except Mycoplasma).

Fungal Structures

  • Dimorphic fungi can grow as yeast at 37°C (body temperature) and as mold at 25°C (room temperature).

Fungal Reproduction & Growth

Protozoa

General Characteristics

  • Protozoa are unicellular eukaryotes.

Protozoan Reproduction

  • Asexual reproduction occurs by fission, budding, or schizogony (multiple fission).

Helminths

General Characteristics

  • Helminths are multicellular parasitic animals.

  • Platyhelminthes are flatworms.

  • Nematodes are roundworms.

  • Dioecious organisms have separate male and female forms; monoecious (hermaphroditic) organisms have both reproductive organs in one individual.

Trematodes & Cestodes

  • Trematodes are also called flukes.

  • Schistosoma is a blood fluke that causes schistosomiasis.

  • The scolex is the head of a tapeworm, used for attachment.

  • Proglottids contain reproductive organs and are segments of a tapeworm.

Nematodes

  • Nematodes are cylindrical (round) worms.

  • Ascaris lumbricoides infects the intestine.

  • Trichuris trichiura is called the whipworm.

  • Enterobius vermicularis is the pinworm.

Arthropods as Vectors

Role in Disease Transmission

  • Vectors carry pathogenic microorganisms from one host to another.

  • Biological transmission occurs when the pathogen multiplies in the vector before transmission.

  • The definitive host is where sexual reproduction of the pathogen occurs.
