Medical mycology is the study of fungi that cause diseases in humans, known as mycoses. These diseases are often challenging to diagnose and treat due to the unique biology of fungi and their resistance to many antimicrobial agents.

Epidemiology of Mycoses

Certain medical, disease, and lifestyle factors increase the risk for opportunistic mycoses. These factors compromise the immune system or disrupt normal microbiota, allowing fungi to cause disease.

Fungal diseases present in three main clinical forms:

  • Fungal infections: Most common; caused by true pathogens or opportunists.

  • Fungal toxicoses: Result from ingestion of poisonous mushrooms or fungal toxins.

  • Allergies: Often due to inhalation of fungal spores, leading to hypersensitivity reactions.

Accurate diagnosis of mycoses relies on a combination of patient history and laboratory analysis. Morphological identification of the fungus is often required, with specialized media such as Sabouraud dextrose agar used to culture fungi.
