Question 1

Which of the following best describes the nutritional mode of all fungi?

Accepted Answer

Chemoheterotrophs that require organic compounds for both energy and carbon

Question 2

Which structure, labeled in the first image, is responsible for energy production in yeast cells?

Accepted Answer

Mitochondria

Question 3

What is the primary difference between yeasts and molds?

Accepted Answer

Yeasts are unicellular and molds are filamentous and multinucleated

Question 4

Which process is depicted in the third image, where small cells are forming off a larger cell?

Accepted Answer

Budding

Question 5

What is the function of hyphae in pathogenic yeasts such as Candida albicans?

Accepted Answer

To invade deeper tissues after colonizing the epithelium

Question 6

Which of the following media is selective for fungi due to its high sugar concentration and low pH?

Accepted Answer

Saboraud Dextrose Agar (SDA)

Question 7

Why is Mycosel agar selective for pathogenic fungi?

Accepted Answer

It contains chloramphenicol to inhibit bacteria and cycloheximide to inhibit most saprophytic fungi

Question 8

Which metabolic pathways can yeasts utilize for energy production?

Accepted Answer

Both aerobic cellular respiration and fermentation

Question 9

What is the role of blastoconidia (blastospores) in fungi?

Accepted Answer

They are asexual spores that develop in clusters along hyphae, often at branching points

Question 10

Which medium would best stimulate the formation of hyphae, blastoconidia, and chlamydoconidia in Candida albicans?

Accepted Answer

Rice Extract Agar

Question 11

A student streaks a plate as shown in the seventh image. What is the purpose of dividing the plate into thirds?

Accepted Answer

To inoculate and compare the growth of three different organisms on the same medium

Question 12

Which of the following statements about chlamydoconidia (chlamydospores) is correct?

Accepted Answer

They are thick-walled survival spores formed at the tips of hyphae under certain conditions

Question 13

Which organism would NOT be expected to grow on Mycosel agar?

Accepted Answer

Saprophytic fungi

Question 14

Which of the following best describes the colonies seen in the sixth image?

Accepted Answer

Yeast colonies, which appear similar to bacterial colonies due to their unicellular nature

Question 15

Which of the following statements about the cell wall in fungi is correct?

Accepted Answer

It provides structural support and is composed mainly of chitin

Question 16

A patient presents with a fungal infection. Which medium would be most appropriate to selectively isolate the pathogenic fungus from a clinical sample?

Accepted Answer

Mycosel agar

Question 17

Which of the following best explains why Saboraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) inhibits bacterial growth?

Accepted Answer

Its high sugar concentration and low pH are unfavorable for most bacteria

Question 18

Which of the following is a facultative anaerobe capable of both aerobic respiration and fermentation?

Accepted Answer

Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the function of the vacuole in a yeast cell?

Accepted Answer

Storage of nutrients and waste products

Question 20
