My experience on the Student Advisory Council – Eizza (Transcript)

Hi, I'm Eizza and I was a part of student advisory council.

I've always carried a quiet urge to speak up and contribute more meaningfully.

Growing up, the desire often fell out of reach, but being a part of the student advisory council changed that. It gave me space to express myself and voice my opinions meaningfully.

As members, we were asked to read and review the chapters from the textbook Exploring Sociology: A Canadian Perspective, and we were encouraged to share honest feedback, discuss what we liked, what did not resonate with us, and how the material could be better suited to a diverse readership.

Mind you, to ensure diverse perspectives, students from across Canadian universities were chosen to speak, write, and discuss on topics that stood out the most to them.

I would also like to mention that the experience encouraged me to develop a more critical eye, especially when it comes to academic content.

The fact that the authors of the textbook were so open to a range of perspectives and yes, even contrasting ones really shows how progressive their approach is as they aim for the content to stand out to people with varying outlooks and experiences.

This opportunity also made me comprehend how critical student voices are in shaping the education system.

We're not isolated from it. We're a part of it and so are you.

Overall, this opportunity left me with a deep sense of accomplishment and pride and helped me gain confidence in speaking up and contributing to discussions, especially when reviewing important content.

I would like to thank the authors and the rest of the team for providing me with this wonderful opportunity.
