Hide definitions
Nuclear Envelope
Double lipid bilayer structure surrounding the nucleus, continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum, separating nucleoplasm from cytosol.
Nuclear Pore Complex
Large protein assembly embedded in the nuclear envelope, regulating selective transport between nucleus and cytosol.
Nuclear Lamina
Protein meshwork lining the inner nuclear membrane, providing structural support and maintaining nuclear shape.
Nucleolus
Dense nuclear region where ribosomal RNA genes are transcribed and ribosome assembly begins.
Perinuclear Space
Compartment between the two nuclear envelope membranes, continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum lumen.
Nucleoplasm
Gel-like substance inside the nucleus, containing chromatin and nuclear bodies.
Chromatin
Complex of DNA and proteins organized into specific nuclear regions, not randomly dispersed.
Heterochromatin
Densely packed chromatin regions that anchor chromosomes to the nuclear envelope, maintaining spatial organization.
Nuclear Export Signal
Molecular tag on mRNA recognized by export machinery, ensuring only properly processed transcripts exit the nucleus.
MRNP Exporter
Protein complex that binds nuclear export signals on mRNA, facilitating their passage through nuclear pores.
Exosome
Nuclear complex responsible for degrading improperly processed RNA and introns, ensuring mRNA quality control.
Nuclear Localization Signal
Amino acid sequence on proteins, rich in lysine and arginine, required for nuclear import.
Importin
Transport protein that recognizes nuclear localization signals and mediates protein entry into the nucleus.
Ran GTP
GTP-bound regulatory protein that triggers cargo release from importin inside the nucleus and enables importin recycling.
Ran GDP
GDP-bound form of Ran, generated in the cytosol, allowing importin to dissociate and participate in further import cycles.
