Experiencing MIS provides an Australian and international business context to MIS, rich with local examples, case studies and the latest trends in this dynamic field.

The text has a modular organisation which allows instructors to pick and choose among topics to tailor-fit their course. Chapters 1 to 12 offer basic topic coverage of MIS and can be matched with 18 chapter extensions which apply the concepts in-depth.

Part 1, 'Why MIS?', introduces MIS and explains why and how it is important for business students.
Part 2, 'Information Technology,' addresses fundamental IT concepts.
Part 3 is titled 'Using IS for Competitive Advantage'. The three chapters here consider enterprise and inter-enterprise IS, social media and business intelligence systems.
Part 4, 'Information Systems Management', addresses systems development, IS management including outsourcing, and information security management.

Examples, case studies, applications and exercises are used throughout to review and apply the concepts while engaging students in learning about the subject.

'This Could Happen To You' boxes located at the start of each part and & each chapter feature a running business scenarios about Financial Planning.
Study Questions in each chapter encouraging students to think as they move through the chapter; by the end they should be able to answer each objective-question comprehensively. This focuses student reading of each chapter and encourages student-centred learning rather than teacher-led instruction.
Two Chapter Guides in each chapter focus on the issues in information systems that are currently most relevant. These guides encourage students to explore different topics and stimulate class discussions on issues that they may face in the real world, including general MIS issues, ethics and 'green' issues. Each includes discussion points intended to stimulate thought, discussion and active participation in order to develop problem-solving and business skills.
End of Chapter and End of Part Case Studies illustrate a situation that requires knowledge of the topic of that chapter. Each leads to an exercise which allows the reader to critically analyse and apply the knowledge they have gained.
Active Review at the end of each chapter revisits the $RU business scenario and encourages students to re-examine the chapter's main concepts.
Key Terms are bolded within chapter content where they're introduced. A list of Key Terms & Concepts also appears at end of chapter to ensure students did not miss any. Students can double check the meaning of a Key Term in the Glossary at the end of the book.
'Using Your Knowledge' sections at the end of each chapter help students to take what they have learned one step further and apply it to practical problems.
Collaboration Exercises ask students to work in teams to apply the chapter's topic to the MIS in Use case for that chapter. Students use Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Microsoft Groove, Microsoft SharePoint or some other tool to collaborate on collective answers.
Highly practical 'Consider Your Net Worth' activities in the review section at the end of each Part ask the students to think about how they can use what they have learned in their own career and how it has increased their personal net worth by giving them a competitive advantage in the workforce.
