The Lockhart River community is located north of Cairns in Queensland. People from the Umpila community in Lockhart River have chosen to share one of their traditional stories.Â
Miiku and Tinta is a Creation story that tells of Miiku (the blackheaded python) and Tinta (two parrot sisters). The story is traditionally told in Umpila language and has been presented in English for Sharing Our Stories.

A landmark series addressing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures in the primary classroom.Sharing Our Stories was created in partnership with the SharingStories Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that works with Indigenous communities. Its aim is to protect, maintain and grow language, stories and cultural heritage using digital technologies and artforms for the benefit of children.
This landmark series supports shared reading, comprehension and critical literacy skills, as well as Humanities and Social Sciences in middle and upper primary classrooms.
