Shane Bullock and Majella Hales
3rd Australian Edition
The first wholly local, comprehensive pathophysiology textbook written for students studying nursing and allied health in Australia and New Zealand.
Principles of Pathophysiology is a highly readable and accessible resource for busy students. Each chapter is co-authored by a scientist and an expert clinician, offering insight into how the science and clinical practice are linked.
Where possible, epidemiological data, lifespan issues, Indigenous issues, clinical practices, drug names, units of measurement and websites referenced are relevant to the Australian and New Zealand region.

Learning aids supplemental to the text:
Solutions Manual
Provides detailed answers to in-chapter and end-of-chapter problems in the book.
Test Bank
A wide variety of question types for homework and quizzing, arranged by learning objective and tagged by NMBA standards.
Digital Image PowerPoint slides
All diagrams and tables from the textbook are available for lecturer use.
The content has been reviewed with respect to the recent literature, as well as current clinical practices and guidelines.
COVID-19 UPDATES
This edition reflects the major effect on human health the COVID-19 pandemic has had. Where appropriate, particular emphasis has been given to the pathophysiological effects of COVID-19 infection, both generally and more specifically on major body systems.
INDIGENOUS HEALTH FAST FACTS AND CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS
The Indigenous health fast facts and cultural considerations sections at the end of most chapters have been updated to reflect the most recent epidemiological data available.
NEW AND REVISED IMAGES
A significant number of new and revised images have been produced for this edition. These images provide clearer understanding or representation of either new or reconceptualised content. Several new and revised clinical snapshots have also been constructed to accommodate the latest in best practice, to clarify previously included material, or to expand on content not previously addressed.
Features throughout the text help students to understand how this content builds upon their pre-existing knowledge, as well as how it will integrate into their future profession.
What you should know before you start this chapter
These questions provide a baseline check and an opportunity for students to ensure they are prepared with the foundational bioscience knowledge they will need for the chapter.
Health professional connections
Information on the inter-professional team management of specific disorders enables students to understand the roles and importance of the various health professionals they will work with.
Students will continue to develop their understanding of how the theory translates to practice with special features embedded throughout the chapters, and a case study scenario at the end of each chapter.
Clinical boxes
These boxes highlight considerations specific to the successful clinical application of relevant knowledge.
Case studies
Clinically accurate and realistic scenarios are paired with Critical Thinking questions, allowing students to apply, synthesise and evaluate their knowledge.
Clinical snapshots
These concept maps are designed to demonstrate the critical links between pathophysiology (pink), clinical manifestations (blue) and management (yellow).
Images and figures
Hundreds of high-quality images and figures bring concepts to life, illustrating complex systems and processes in a way that is clear and easy for students to understand.
