Ch. 13, "Special Education: The Challenges of Special Education in Inclusive Classrooms," examines how IDEA's principles, disability categories, and insufficient funding impact special education; the impact of special education’s identification categories; racial, cultural, gender, and socioeconomic disparities in special education; youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system; and the advantages and challenges of teaching in inclusive classrooms.

Expanded discussions of race relations, White privilege, and anti-racism help teachers address racism, foster meaningful conversations, and incorporate key social justice practices in their own teaching (Ch. 3: "Talking about Racism and Social Justice," "Anti-Racism and Teaching for Social Justice," and Figure 3.4, "Teaching for Social Justice").
An accessible overview of contemporary immigration includes new sections on immigration issues and anti-immigration policies, sentiment, and hate crimes (Ch. 5).
John Ogbu's discussion of "voluntary/involuntary immigrants” or "caste-like minorities" is covered in a new section, allowing readers to think about how perceived status or social barriers can impact academic achievement (Ch. 6: Box 6.3).
New Case Examples in Chapters 11 and 15 help students connect theory with actual teaching practice.
