Forming the building blocks students need for academic writing in any course

The Miller College Reader helps students organize their writing around structural patterns and engage in these patterns by reading. These patterns help students organize their knowledge to see different ways in which information can be conveyed. Most commonly used in academic writing, the structural patterns will guide students through skills such as narration, description, classification, comparison, explanation, analysis, definition, and argument – across all subject matter they may encounter in their academic work.

The 12th Edition expands on previous editions with 43 essays. This includes 26 new essays, 11 written by students, and 27 that employ examples of the organizational strategies emphasized throughout the book, used in academic and literary texts, and visuals. Readings are chosen based on how well they demonstrate a particular pattern of organization, appeal to an audience of first-year students, and promote interesting discussion and writing activities.

  • Sections are arranged by difficulty in each chapter, scaled by length of difficulty and sophistication, to move from student examples in the introduction to professional writing examples toward the end. Each chapter has at least five selections; most have six or more.
  • Clear introductions in each chapter are organized around key questions about prewriting, writing, revising, and analyzing.
  • Guides to Reading and Analyzing, Writing an Essay, and Revising an Essay are covered in separate chapters that extend the process of writing and revision. Two essays--one by an undergraduate and one by a professional writer--show the writing process at work.
  • An abundance of detailed writing prompts appear in each essay on a minimum of seven topics. Additional possibilities are included at the end of each chapter.
  • Links between grammar and writing are illustrated by an activity following each essay, as well as in a glossary and ready reference at the end of the book that explains common problems.

  • Teaching and writing resources are available for planning and reading in a composition course. They offer sections on teaching the writing process including how to use prewriting activities, how to conference, design and implement collaborative learning activities, and to grade. They also offer advice on how to plan a class discussion, how to avoid pointless discussions, and how to conduct a writing assessment, as well as a variety of sample course materials such as reproducible worksheets.
  • Annotations for each essay include teaching strategies that suggest ways to teach the essay and and keep students focused. The strategy includes:
    • Explanations of allusions and context with appropriate background information that explains allusions and historical context.
    • Essay activities on specific critical reading topics.
    • Discussion question responses include all possible responses to discussion questions.
    • Quizzes. Two quizzes are provided for each essay, one on content and the other on vocabulary. Each quiz has five multiple choice questions printed on a reproducible form. Quizzes are intended to be administered and graded quickly to provide the instructor with an efficient means for testing students' ability to extract significant ideas from the readings and demonstrate their understanding of vocabulary. Keys to both quizzes are included.

George Miller is a Professor of English at the University of Delaware. For 18 years he was Director of the Writing Program, despite the fact that his dissertation was on Milton's Paradise Lost. He also has served as Director of the Undergraduate Program, Associate Chair, and Chair of the Department.

He is the author of seven books and about 200 articles on topics that range from early American papermakers, through 17th century literature, to American paper ephemera and popular culture, and writing pedagogy. He has taught graduate seminars in Teaching Composition and in Methods of Research, as well as a wide variety of courses in literature and in writing.

Professor Miller has presented papers at scholarly conferences, historical societies, museums such as Carolinas Symposium on British Studies, Modern Language Association Conventions, the Lilly Conferences on College and University Teaching, and the annual Advanced Placement conferences. An Advanced Placement edition of The Prentice Hall Reader with a 110-page guide to the AP Language and Composition Exam was published in 2009.

He has served as a writing consultant to a wide range of schools, colleges and universities, professional organizations and businesses, in a number of states, including the Delaware Judiciary and the Department of Justice though annual legal writing seminars.
