“Rapid reading is simply the perfect choice for our students. 95% of our students have English as a second language and most are intimidated by the traditional reading schemes. Rapid offers the solution for our emergent readers by offering them a programme of reading at their level with subjects that gain and sustain their interest. Having the programme accessible online makes monitoring and evaluation not only possible but enjoyable for both student and teacher. In today's technological age, this programme is providing the essential daily link with reading. Our students are now reading English books for pleasure and are excited about the stories they have discovered. This has all been possible thanks to the Rapid reading programme.”

NFER Case Studies
As part of the independent research study into the effectiveness of Rapid Reading, the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) trialled Rapid's reading materials and software on our behalf in a representative sample of ten primaries and one secondary school in England, Wales and Scotland.
NFER also independently commissioned, carried out and wrote the following series of case studies to illustrate their study. These case studies are completely independent and have had no input from us so are genuine and honest representations of how teachers and pupils felt about the Rapid Reading materials. The case studies are anonymous according to the participating schools' wishes.
Case Study 1: Birmingham
Speaking the right language - one primary school’s experience of teaching children with 43 different languages
In the three years between September 2004 and September 2007, Water Mill Primary School in Selly Oak near Birmingham taught children who spoke 43 different mother-tongue languages. Yet despite the challenge of educating children who speak many languages and of having a full social, cultural and economic range of pupils all under one roof, the school achieves good SATs results. We look at how head teacher Jenny Edginton has achieved this.
School Background
Water Mill Primary School is a one form entry school, teaching from Reception to Year 6. This academic year, 25 different languages including Filipino, Fijian, Yoruba, Korean, Slovakian, Hungarian, Punjabi and Gujarati are spoken by the 167 pupils. The school has always experienced a percentage of overseas students due to its proximity to Birmingham University and the hospital but this number has dramatically increased in the past five years.
For Water Mill Primary School, the key to helping new students for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL) to settle in does not lie in expensive translators; instead, an immersion in the language and a consideration of the needs of a family new to the country is the solution.
A helping hand
Landing in a school where you know no one and where all of your peers speak another language can be a lonely experience. At Water Mill Primary, new EAL pupils are buddied up with another child in their class who shows them the ropes: the buddy will take them to lunch, show where children hang their coats and teach them about the school and its culture. Such things as this are easy to communicate without a shared language; pointing and non-verbal gestures work well enough for young children and playground games are universal. A relationship like this is vital at the start of a period at a new school as behaviour and rituals may vary considerably from country to country.
Supporting the family
A recent project undertaken by the school was to create a welcome book for new families and pupils. The four books, comprising European, Asian, African and Eastern languages, indicate the need-to-know aspects of school life at Water Mill such as telling what time school starts and finishes, which clothes are worn for PE lessons and showing where the toilets are, with one for boys and one for girls. Each book uses prominent photographs and images and the text is written in up to ten different languages, including English.
Some schools can take it for granted that parents will know how schools operate but for those from foreign countries, nothing can be assumed. Although there are CD packages available which provide basic school information, Water Mill has found that their specific guide has proved very popular and useful for new families. EAL children wrote all of the captions in the books, meaning that everything included was trialled and tested as essential information.
In the classroom
Each class in the school has a teaching assistant who may dedicate part of the day to EAL pupils. One Teaching Assistant has received specialist EAL training and in the afternoons works with groups or individuals. Pupils are only withdrawn for short periods and the spoken language of every class and session is always English so that pupils are immersed in as much of the new language as possible. Activities during the teaching assistant’s sessions might be as simple as drawing a pencil case and its contents and labelling these for the pupil to become familiar with. Both financial and teaching help have been received from the LA in the past and the school is fortunate that the budget currently allows the funding of a specialist TA.
Teaching assistants are also involved in pre-teaching, during which pupils learn vocabulary that they will need for an upcoming topic studied with the rest of their class. For example, if the Roman era is about to be studied, the teaching assistant will run through some relevant words to ensure that every pupil gets the most out of the lessons.
During a child’s first week at Water Mill Primary School, no assessments are made; children are given the chance to settle into school before being tested to assess what they can already do and what they need to learn.
Reading and speaking
The teachers and teaching assistants at Water Mill Primary School have a wealth of material suitable for assisting EAL pupils, including Rapid from Heinemann. With the books and software programme, pupils practice reading with the specialist EAL teaching assistant and then, when confident, carry on alone either on one of the four computers in the classroom or using a laptop from the mobile ICT suite. They then discuss their reading - with the EAL TA whose praise further encourages effort and progress.
The key to becoming a fluent speaker in English is confidence. When pupils feel confident and secure, they are happier to try to speak in their new, non-native language and thus by giving them the chance to practise and speak either with their friends, classmates, their teaching assistant or to the Rapid reading programme, they will become confident more quickly. It is important to remember that for many pupils, school might be the only place where they can practise their English.
Water Mill Primary School also has some dual-language reading books so that pupils can see their native language alongside its English translation. With these books, pupils of the same reading abilities can sit and read together, regardless of their mother-tongue language. The school does not use a reading scheme but values good quality books of all types.
Across the curriculum
Becoming proficient in English does not require intensive language lessons; a wide-ranging curriculum, full of enjoyable activities, will mean that children are comfortable and confident and will want to learn.
Last academic year, every class in the school made one or two large sculptures which were then set in a trail in the garden. With art and design technology, all pupils can join in, irrespective of nationality or language and children can learn a lot from each other by working in a team. If children are nervous or afraid, they will not learn but by engaging with a wide and creative curriculum, they will become involved and eager to share ideas and abilities and this improves their language skills.
Celebrating language
Water Mill Primary School is a family-orientated school, with the feel of a village school despite its proximity to Birmingham. Every year, the school performs a traditional nativity play, has a Harvest festival and demonstrates traditional English values and culture.
However, as part of an international city, this inclusive school also embraces the language and culture of each of its pupils. For example in assembly, children sing “The wheels on the bus” in many languages and recently, the head invited all parents to an international meal. The day was a great success, giving parents the opportunity to mix and meet each other, each bringing a dish from their own country to share at a picnic. The building of a positive and friendly community helps to improve parents’ English language ability and promote a shared language and thus helps parents to value the growing bilingual fluency of their children.
Categorising all EAL students together does not make sense; all pupils are individuals coming from different countries, speaking different languages and staying for varying lengths of time. However, all new pupils should be integrated into the class and immersed in their new language. Encouraging English speaking, applauding efforts and making learning fun will help to create a sense of enjoyment and confidence in a new language and by involving native English pupils in the progress will raise standards in all areas for all children.
Case Study 2: Lambeth
School background
Case Study 2 is from a large, two-form entry primary school situated in the inner London Borough of Lambeth, close to Brixton, London. The area is mostly residential and has a high level of deprivation. The school serves a diverse ethnic community and has a school population of over 400 pupils. The school has recently undergone a major refurbishment programme following the amalgamation of the infant and junior schools on to one site.
How have the materials been used in school?
A year 5 teacher had been using the reading books with 4 10-year-old pupils in her class - 2 boys and 2 girls. The teacher worked with the pupils on a 1:1 basis in the classroom. Each pupil read a different book. Individual reading sessions lasted about 10 to 15 minutes about twice a week.
What did the school think of the reading books?
The books were easy to use with pupils on a 1:1 basis but the teacher also felt they would be suitable for group work. The mixture of fiction and non-fiction texts within each of the books was felt to be a particularly useful aspect,
'they give information about Big Foot and then they use Big Foot in the story and introduce characters, that's nice, it's more realistic'.
The teacher felt some of the pictures were quite 'loud' and that sometimes the text obscured the pictures. She felt that making the books larger in size might overcome this. The text and the themes were also considered good.
'When I first started using the books with the pupils they were worried about what sort of books they were going to be but after one or two sessions they started showing interest'.
The pupils stayed on-task whilst they were reading the books. However, the teacher felt the books could be slightly longer.
'The length of the books are good but by the time you have the pupils' interest the book is finished. If the books were a little longer that would be more effective'.
The teacher used the teaching guide and had found the activities in it useful . The teacher also said,
'the Quiz section is good and the pupils liked the jokes'.
The Before Reading page was highlighted as a good idea.
What did the school like most about the reading books?
"I most liked how they turned the information into stories and the Quiz page and the guidance for the teacher is good because it tells you exactly what to do and teaching assistants could use it as well'.
What do the pupils think?
Each of the pupils was asked to give the reading books a 'thumbs up' or a 'thumbs down'. 3 pupils gave a thumbs up and one pupil gave a half thumb.
Overall
The school were, on the whole, positive about the reading books. Both the teaching assistant and the pupils had enjoyed using them. The pictures in the books were particularly well liked.
Case Study 3: Bristol
School background
Case Study 2 is a mixed community primary school, with nursery provision, situated on the south side of Bristol. There are 365 pupils on roll, aged 3-11 years. The school mainly draws its pupils from the local area and the vast majority of pupils are of White British heritage.
How have the materials been used in school?
The reading books were used with 6 pupils in the school. 2 pupils were selected from each of the year groups 3, 4 and 5. There was an equal split of boys and girls. The pupils were introduced to the books by the head teacher and the literacy coordinator and were asked to select which book they wished to read first. There was then an initial session where the pupils and the teacher familiarised themselves with the materials. The books were then read on a weekly basis in 1:1 sessions.
What did the school think of the reading books?
The books were easy to use with pupils on a 1:1 basis but the teacher also felt they The teacher who used the reading books was very impressed. She said the pupils were,
'very motivated and excited to use the books'.
She also felt the pupils liked the size of the books and the photographs. It was felt that the books were especially good for year 5 pupils, particularly those who were struggling with their reading, as being able to complete a whole book was a confidence boost for them.
'Not picking up a huge book that they have to plough through, that's a confidence builder'.
Her first impressions were,
'Wow – we have something here that is suitable for all ages'.
The teacher initially felt the books were more suitable for boys but quickly changed her mind when she discovered that the girls who were reading the books were just as motivated to use them.
'One girl went for 'Under the Sea', another one went for the animal one. They all chose differently'.
It was also felt that the way the small chunks of text in the books and the mixture of real photographs with cartoons were good features.
What did the school like most about the reading books?
The teacher was particularly impressed with the Before Reading page and the Quiz. She also liked the subtle way in which the stages of the books were presented on the back page so they were not too obvious.
'A lot of the subjects [in the books] were things [the] children were already doing in class.'
The motivational aspect of the books was considered to be particularly appealing. The children were very excited to use the books and the teacher said they would continue to use them in school.
What do the pupils think?
The six pupils who used the books were asked to rate the reading books by giving a 'thumbs up' or a 'thumbs down'. All six pupils gave the books a 'thumbs up'.
The teacher said that the pupils liked the size of the books and the fact that they could fit them into their school drawer. They really liked the real life facts in the books and wanted to tell their friends about things they had learnt.
And this is what the children thought of Rapid:
'I liked the titles', 'I liked the pictures'.
'There were all different subjects and I liked the things the books talk about'.
'You could use them for information and we could learn things'.
'The colours suit the pictures and the titles'.
Overall
The school was very positive about the reading materials. The pupils were motivated to use the books and enjoyed the topic areas and the way the books were presented. The school was happy to continue using the reading materials and looked forward to using the software with other pupils in the school.
Case Study 4: Surrey
School Background
Case Study 5 is from a small, one-form entry primary school providing for pupils aged 4-11 years. The school is situated in the north of Surrey and draws pupils from a wide catchment area. The school population comes from both the immediate, affluent local area and from less affluent areas further afield. The school has low numbers of pupils who are eligible for free schools meals or who are from ethnic minority backgrounds. The school population is 192 pupils.
How have the materials been used in school?
The reading books were used with 5 year 3 pupils, all boys. The reading sessions were carried out on a 1:1 basis with teaching assistants - this worked well. The reading sessions took place on a twice weekly basis.
What did the school think of the reading books?
The layout of the books was well liked. It was felt they were an accessible length for the pupils. The pupils were keen to use the new materials.
'They were appealing to the children, they liked the layout and the books were an accessible length for them'.
The school felt that having books of an accessible length was important for pupils with a lower reading ability. The school felt that finding enough reading materials aimed at less able, older readers was sometimes difficult.
'It's not something they are going to have seen already in the infants, they haven't got someone else saying I read that when I was in year 1'.
The school also found that the books matched the reading ability levels of the pupils quite well. They thought it would be interesting to see the impact of paired reading sessions, with less able readers reading alongside pupils with a higher reading level. They also considered using the books to complement literacy lessons
Some concern was expressed about the content of a few of the books and their suitability for younger children. The school felt the books were specifically aimed at boys.
What did the school like most about the reading books?
'The Tricky Words were good and they were the ones the children would have had difficulty with'.
'Children who are reluctant readers will often prefer non-fiction'.
It was felt that fictional texts are often more frequently available and so having the opportunity to read non-fiction was welcomed.
'The size of text is accessible to the children, keeping it in small chunks is good'.
'The teaching guide and the guided questions were useful, anything that means you can put something into place without lots of additional planning. As a teacher if you know the supporting material is there rather than having to search around is helpful'.
'Even though the books are at different stages you could tie in a book with what you were doing in your literacy'.
It was also felt the books were of a good size and length and that there was a good mixture of cartoons and pictures, which would appeal to different pupils.
What do the pupils think?
Both pupils gave the books a 'thumbs up' and said they had enjoyed using them. The books about monsters and snakes were well liked.
They were keen to talk about the things they had learned with their classmates and the headteacher said that the pupils had been very motivated to use the books.
Overall
The school was positive about Rapid. They felt that 1:1 reading sessions were helpful for pupils requiring more targeted support, but would also like to use them with groups of pupils. The school was happy to continue using the books and felt they could be an additional resource to supplement other reading materials.
