Practical tips for supporting neurodivergent learners in the classroom

Educators need to meet the needs of all students, including those who are neurodivergent. Neurodivergence refers to variations in the human brain and cognition, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. Among these, dyslexia is one of the most common learning differences, affecting how individuals process written and spoken language. Although each student’s needs are unique, there are several practical, research-backed strategies educators can employ to support and empower these learners. 

Let’s look at some tips for teachers, which cover everything from font choice and classroom environment to presentation of information and assessment design. Although these are designed to support neurodivergent students, they will in fact help foster a more inclusive, accessible, and positive learning experience for all learners.

Understanding the needs of neurodivergent learners

Before diving into practical strategies, it’s important to appreciate the experiences of neurodivergent and dyslexic learners. Dyslexia, for example, is not a marker of intelligence but rather a difference in how the brain processes language. Dyslexic learners may struggle with reading fluency, decoding, spelling and rapid word recognition, even while they often excel in creativity and complex problem-solving.

Neurodivergent learners – whether they have dyslexia, ADHD, autism or other differences – may benefit from adjustments in classroom routines, communication styles and learning materials. By understanding these needs, educators can create a more equitable and supportive environment.

The best fonts for dyslexic and neurodivergent students

Choosing the right font is a simple yet powerful way to boost reading accessibility for all students, especially those with dyslexia or other processing differences. The wrong font can make reading unnecessarily difficult and frustrating, while the right choice can help letters stand apart and reduce confusion.

Sans-serif fonts are widely recommended for their clean, straightforward design. These fonts lack the decorative "feet" (serifs) found in traditional fonts, making each character more distinguishable. Excellent san-serif choices include:

  • Arial
  • Verdana
  • Tahoma
  • Calibri
  • Century Gothic

Specialized dyslexia-friendly fonts

There are fonts specifically designed to support dyslexic readers by making commonly-confused letters less ambiguous and heavier at the bottom to help prevent letter flipping. These include OpenDyslexic, Dyslexie and Lexie Readable. However, these fonts are not universally popular with dyslexic readers. 

Where possible, allow students to adjust font preferences on class devices so they can choose the font that's best for them.

Best practices in font formatting

Size: Use a minimum of 12–14 point size for clarity; larger sizes can be helpful for headings or for students who need more support.

Spacing: Increase line spacing to at least 1.5; wider letter spacing and extra space between paragraphs make reading less visually taxing.

Avoid italics and underlining: Italics distort letter forms and underlining can obscure letters—use bold to highlight instead.

Contrast: Opt for black or dark text on a pale, non-glare background (such as off-white or pastel shades).

Consistent layout: Keep formatting uniform throughout materials to minimize distractions and support predictable reading flow.

Avoid decorative or complex fonts: Steer clear of ornate, script or novelty fonts such as Papyrus. These fonts can confuse letter shapes, reduce legibility and make reading much harder for neurodivergent students. Stick to clean, simple typefaces designed for readability.

Remember, flexibility is crucial as different students may have distinct font preferences. Encourage learners to share what works best for them and adapt when feasible.

Presenting information clearly and accessibly

The way information is presented can make a big difference for neurodivergent learners.

  • Chunk information: Present content in small, manageable sections instead of large blocks of text. Use headings, bullet points and numbered lists to help organize ideas.
  • Use visual aids: Incorporate diagrams, mind maps, infographics and images alongside text. Many learners process visual information more effectively than written language alone.
  • Supplement written text with audio or video: Offer spoken instructions, audiobooks, or video explanations. Providing multiple avenues to access content supports a wider range of learning styles.
  • Minimize cognitive load: Avoid overwhelming students with too much information at once. Introduce new concepts gradually and review key points often.
  • Provide clear instructions: Break down tasks into step-by-step instructions. Check for understanding by having students repeat directions or demonstrate the task.

Supporting organization and memory

Some neurodivergent learners may face challenges with organization, working memory and following complex instructions. Consider the following:

  • Use planners and checklists: Provide visual checklists, planners or digital apps to help students organize assignments and deadlines.
  • Color-code materials: Color-coded folders and labels can help students quickly locate notes, homework and resources.
  • Allow note-taking alternatives: Encourage mind mapping, drawing or audio recording as alternatives to traditional note-taking.
  • Offer memory aids: Use mnemonics, rhymes and visual cues to reinforce key concepts.

Flexible assessment and assignment design

Standardized assessments and traditional assignments can disadvantage some neurodivergent learners. To level the playing field:

  • Offer alternatives to written exams: Allow students to demonstrate learning through oral presentations, videos or creative projects where appropriate.
  • Extended time and untimed tests: Provide extra time for reading, processing and producing work to reduce anxiety and allow for accurate demonstration of knowledge.
  • Clear rubrics: Share assessment criteria in advance and use straightforward language.
  • Feedback that builds confidence: Focus on effort, improvement and the strengths each student brings to the class.

Building an inclusive classroom environment

Creating a classroom culture that values difference, flexibility and acceptance is essential.

  • Promote a growth mindset: Emphasize that mistakes are part of learning. Celebrate progress, resilience, and creative thinking.
  • Encourage peer support: Foster collaboration, buddy systems and group work that allows students to shine in different roles.
  • Be mindful of sensory needs: Some neurodivergent learners are sensitive to noise, light or texture. Provide quiet zones, sensory tools or headphones as needed.
  • Respect privacy and agency: Allow students to disclose challenges at their own pace. Avoid singling anyone out or making assumptions about abilities.

Utilize technology

Technology offers a wealth of tools for making learning more accessible:

  • Text-to-speech software: Tools like NaturalReader and built-in accessibility features let students hear text read aloud.
  • Speech-to-text tools: Enable students to dictate assignments or notes, reducing the burden of spelling and handwriting.
  • Accessible learning platforms: Choose digital platforms that allow for customization, such as adjustable font sizes, background colors or audio narration.
  • Organizational apps: Tools such as Google Calendar, Trello or reminders can help neurodivergent students track assignments and manage time.

Communicating with families and specialists

Strong home-school collaboration is vital. Keep open lines of communication with families and, where possible, collaborate with learning specialists, speech-language therapists and occupational therapists. Share strategies that are effective in the classroom and seek input from caregivers who know their child’s strengths and needs best.

Be understanding

Every learner is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. The most powerful tool at a teacher’s disposal is a flexible, empathetic approach – one that invites feedback, encourages self-advocacy and continuously adapts.

By implementing these practical strategies, educators not only help neurodivergent and dyslexic students thrive academically but also foster a sense of belonging and self-worth that extends far beyond the classroom walls. In doing so, we empower all learners to unlock their full potential and contribute their distinct perspectives to our ever-evolving world.

    5 team building activities to help break down boundaries

    At the beginning of term adolescent learners are often shy, embarrassed and awkward. They are reluctant to speak English in front of their peers or show enthusiasm in class, often suffering from social pressure and lack of self-confidence. It can take weeks or months for students to get to know each other and form bonds. However, don’t despair if your teen learners are like this. There are plenty of team-building games and activities you can do to help students build relationships that will allow them to feel comfortable and relaxed in the classroom.

    Team building activities to help break down boundaries

    Why use team-building activities in the classroom?

    Team building activities can help:

    • Break down boundaries
    • Teens get to know each other
    • Build trust and teamwork
    • Bring 21st-century skills - collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills - to life

    Team-building games can also be a lot of fun. They require students to work together to reach a common goal and sometimes include a competitive element, which can encourage teenage learners to get really involved. There is a wealth of different team-building games and activities suitable for older children and teens, but here we have chosen five that we think your teenage learners will love.

    1) Human knot

    In this fun physical activity, teamwork is essential. Students form a human knot, which they have to work together to untangle. It will also give you an idea of which students show leadership qualities.

    Materials needed: none

    How to play:

    Have students stand in a circle, making sure they are close together. If you have a large class, having students play in two or more groups may be better. The larger the group, the more complicated the puzzle will be. Tell students to reach across the circle with each arm and hold the hands of two other students. They can't choose the people standing on either side of them. Make sure students hold a left hand with their left hand, and vice versa. Now the human knot is formed.

    Tell students that they have to try to untangle the knot without dropping the hands they are holding. When they have successfully untangled the knot, students will be standing in a regular circle holding hands. Students will need to bend, twist, and move under or step over other students' arms.

    Tip: If one student is reluctant to play, give them the role of "director". This student can walk around the outside of the knot, giving instructions to help the group solve the problem.

    If you are doing this in groups, have them race against each other. The team to solve the problem first - wins.

    2) Magic carpet

    In this game, teams stand on a "magic carpet" which they have to turn over while still standing on it. Teams must decide on a strategy together and carry it out — if they try to do it individually, someone will inevitably fall off.

    Materials needed: rugs, towels, or large pieces of cardboard (one per team)

    How to play:

    Give each team their magic carpet and have them stand on it. Tell students they are on a magic flying carpet high in the sky, but there's a problem — the carpet is upside down. They need to turn the carpet over without anyone falling off.

    They need to devise a strategy for turning the carpet over without anyone touching the floor. Teams can work individually, or they can collaborate to help each other.

    The activity can be set up as a race to see which team flips their carpet first.

    Tip: Encourage students to rethink their strategy if it doesn't appear to be working. Evaluating your decisions and adapting your plan is a useful 21st-century skill that students can use throughout the school year.

    3) Build it

    Teenage students love a practical challenge; in this activity, the element of competition will undoubtedly get them involved. With just basic materials, students have to work together to build the tallest freestanding tower within a time limit.

    Materials needed: balloons (one pack per team), sticky tape, a tape measure, balloon pumps (optional)

    How to play:

    Have students form teams of four and hand out the materials. Tell students to build the tallest freestanding tower using just balloons and sticky tape in ten minutes. Explain that after ten minutes, you will check and measure the structures. If it falls over, that team is eliminated from the challenge.

    Tell students how much time is left after five minutes and again two minutes before the time ends. Have teams stand back from their towers. Inspect each tower, measure it, and record the results. You may wish to give the winning team a prize.

    Tip: Increase the challenge by giving students mixed bags of different-shaped balloons, including modeling balloons.

    4) My eyes, your eyes

    Students will have lots of fun guiding each other or being guided through an obstacle course by their teammates. This activity tests communication skills and builds trust between pairs of students.

    Materials needed: blindfolds or scarves (one per pair) and obstacles, e.g., chairs and boxes.

    Preparation: Before the activity, set up the obstacle course by placing furniture and other items around the classroom. Decide where the route students take will begin and end, marking the finish line.

    How to play:

    Put students in pairs. If possible, have them work with a student they don't know very well. Have one student in each pair cover their eyes with a blindfold. This student is a blinded person and their partner will be their eyes. The guide stands behind their blind partner and places their hands on their partner's shoulders. Their job is to quietly give instructions to guide their partner towards the finish line, navigating the obstacles. The first pair to finish wins.

    Have students swap roles. Move some of the obstacles. Then repeat the activity.

    Tip: If possible, play the game in the playground or in the school gym. The larger the space, the more complex you can make the route.

    5) Scavenger hunt

    This is a longer activity that requires slightly more planning than the others. Teams will complete a set of tasks and challenges as a race. Choose a mixture of fun challenges and serious tasks to turn this activity into a fun diagnostic test to determine students' English levels.

    Materials needed: Worksheet containing a list of tasks and challenges (one per team). Tasks can be both language-related and practical.

    How to play:

    Put students into teams. This activity is ideal for students with different skills and abilities, so try to ensure teams are mixed-ability. Tell students that they are going to race to complete a series of tasks that they will find on their worksheet. The fastest team to complete all tasks correctly wins. Some tasks can be completed by one student.

    Explain that students don't need to complete the tasks in order. Point out that you will monitor them closely to ensure there is no cheating. Remind students that they must use English at all times. You can choose to penalize students by having them repeat or do an extra task if they use L1.

    Tip: If you think students might try to cheat, before you set the teams, nominate students to be team monitors (one per team). They will have the worksheet and make sure that the team fulfills each task. Alternatively, if students have mobile phones or tablets, have them take pictures and videos of their team members completing the task.

    What does it mean to be fluent in English?

    What do we mean by English fluency, and how can understanding competencies across the four skills provide a more realistic picture of communicative English ability?

    What is fluency?

    As someone who worked in dictionaries, the meaning of words has always interested me – and fluency is a particular case in point.

    Language learners often set themselves the goal of becoming fluent in a language. Job adverts often specify “fluent in English or Spanish” as a requirement. But what does being 'fluent' in a language actually mean? If we look in the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, we see that fluent means “able to speak a language very well”. Fluent speech or writing is described as “smooth and confident, with no mistakes”. In general, fluency is most often associated with spoken language – but is that the goal of all language learners? And what does being able to speak fluently show about the other language skills?

    Describing English proficiency

    Before entering the world of dictionaries, I taught English as a foreign language in France. At that time, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) had not yet been published and learners were described in very general terms – beginner, intermediate, advanced – with no agreed standards on what learners at each level were expected to know. As well as establishing standards, the CEFR also shifted the focus of language assessment from knowledge of grammar and vocabulary to functional competence, i.e. what can a student actually do with the language they’re learning across the four skills:

    • listening
    • reading
    • speaking
    • writing

    Interestingly, while calling out specific objectives for each skill, almost two-thirds of the information in the CEFR describes spoken language. This seems to imply that spoken fluency is indeed the most important goal for all language learners.

    Mapping out a personalized path to proficiency

    As a global publisher, Pearson English recognizes that all learners are different – in their backgrounds, learning environments and learning goals. This is why we have undertaken new research to extend the set of learning objectives contained in the CEFR to account for learners who need detailed information about their level in all four skills, not just in one (typically, that of speaking).

    No learner will be equally proficient in all four language skills – in the same way that no native speaker is equally proficient in all skills in their first language. Some of us are better at writing than speaking, and many are illiterate in their first language. A true measure of language proficiency needs to take all skills into account. Equally, not every learner of English will need to be 'fluent' in spoken communication.

    Many researchers need to read papers in English and attend conferences in English – but will only ever present and write in their first language. Is 'fluency' a good way to describe their goal? And if it isn’t, does that somehow diminish their language achievements?

    By acknowledging proficiency in individual skills – rather than catch-all terms such as 'fluent' – we gain a clearer understanding of goals and outcomes, and with this knowledge, we are in a better position to tailor learning to the individual.
