Transforming confidence in teachers and students
A Pearson GSE Partner School program case study.
In 2023, Pearson launched the GSE Partner School program in Indonesia to address gaps in English education and support the implementation of a new national curriculum. The goal of the program is to support the delivery of best-practice learning, teaching and assessment, underpinned by the Global Scale of English (GSE) - helping educators and students alike achieve measurable success in English language proficiency. The results provide evidence of the positive impact resulting from the implementation of the Pearson English Journey – a complete solution that integrates teaching and assessment using the GSE.

Challenge
English teaching in Indonesia faced significant challenges:
- A new national curriculum introduced CEFR-aligned learning outcomes, requiring a shift to skills-based instruction.
- Many teachers were unfamiliar with CEFR levels or communicative teaching methodologies.
- The COVID-19 pandemic had worsened existing learning gaps.
Solution
The Pearson GSE Partner School program was introduced to help schools adapt to these changes:
- Teachers received training and resources to implement the new curriculum effectively.
- The GSE framework provided clear learning objectives, aligned with CEFR, to guide instruction and assessments.
- Schools gained access to GSE-based courseware and digital tools, providing tangible evidence of progress.
Results
The program has already delivered remarkable outcomes:
- 98% of surveyed educators reported increased learner engagement.
- 96% of teachers felt more confident in their teaching practices.
- Students achieved measurable improvements in proficiency, with average GSE score gains of 5.4 to 5.9 points over a year.

"English teaching in Indonesia is not merely a profession; it’s a mission to empower youth with the skills to navigate a borderless world. The transformed curriculum has given room for teachers to apply skills-based lessons which lead to real-world applicability. It’s great to see the Pearson GSE Partner School initiative supporting our teachers to be the best educators they can be."
