In her brilliant Cecil B DeMille award acceptance speech at the 2018 golden Globes. Oprah Winfrey began with a vivid story. She said in 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor in my mother's house. And Millwall. And immediately we see young Oprah Winfrey sitting on a linoleum floor. The picture is clear and we begin playing the movie in our minds. Story is our most powerful way to connect with others when we don't have physical touch, even across long distances. And through video camera lenses, a well-told story creates a sense of connection that no other medium can. This is as true in business as an, every other area of communication. The problem is we don't see examples of great business storytelling. If it's happening in some unique business boardrooms across the world. Most of us don't know about. Uh, well told business story has many of the same elements as any other great story with special consideration for the audience in this video. I want to share with you the most important things to think about in business storytelling. First, always remember that it's always all about them. Who is this audience? What do they care about and why will they pay attention to. What are their unique struggles? When you're looking at a business audience, you have a common struggle of time and attention. Most people in the business environment are juggling many priorities at once and feel behind much of the time. So you know that you want your story to be concise to the point and impact. Next, make sure, you know, the point you're trying to make by telling this story, why are you choosing this story for this audience? Once you've thought about this audience and the point you want to make focus on creating a connection with them, how can you show by your choice of details as you open the story that you understand their stress? Or what their life is like. Finally, bring your point home. A business story is likely not the place to focus on building mystery though that strategy can work well. In other storytelling, your goal is to create a quick connection, build credibility through relevance and bring home an impactful point. This is the perfect time to take a look at a presentation. You have coming up, ask yourself where you can add a relevant, impactful story to bring your point to life, and then add the power of story to help influence your audience.
