ESAP: online teaching methodology

Engage / Study / Activate / Practice
Teaching online can be much easier to plan and more efficient to deliver when following the ESAP framework.
ESAP stands for Engage, Study, Activate and Practice, which refer to four core steps every online lesson should follow. They correspond to face-to-face lesson stages and adjust them to consider different interaction opportunities as well as digital tools that are available to distant teaching.

Using the ESAP framework in an online classroom

Watch a series of training sessions about the ESAP Framework and how to use it efficiently to plan and deliver successful online lessons.

Introduction to the ESAP methodology

Lindsay Warwick introduces Pearson’s ESAP methodology for online planning, teaching and learning.

Introduction to video conferencing tools

Lindsay Warwick presents the ESAP Framework in the context of digital tools you need to deliver the lessons.

Four stages of a successful online lesson

The ESAP methodology is similar to a traditional face-to-face lesson but takes into account the online teaching context and digital tools available.

Following these four ESAP steps will help to plan the lessons quicker and easier.

Engage: warm-up, retrieval practice, prior knowledge activation

Stage details

  • engaging students with lesson content from the very first minute
  • doing retrieval practice based on common error report from MyEnglishLab
  • creating more personalized learning experience for students

Study: new language introduction followed by controlled practice

Stage details

  • using Presentation Tool and screen-sharing with students
  • avoiding lengthy teacher talking time
  • varying the pace of the lesson and type of activities
  • keeping students as active as possible
  • giving students enough time to practice new language (using peer teaching if possible)
  • giving students enough time to think of an answer before nominating a student to respond
  • using the whiteboard to give whole-class feedback and the chat box to give personalized feedback to individual learners directly

Activate: free language production

Stage details

  • organizing speaking tasks by managing microphones
  • pairing or grouping students in breakout rooms
  • nominating students to answer verbally
  • inviting learners to type an answer into the chat box

Practice: in an interactive environment

Stage details

  • interactive online exercises
  • instant feedback for students
  • automated scoring and reporting
  • checking students’ performance online
  • tailoring next lesson to target students’ weak areas
  • saving time on marking
