Learning my family language with Mondly by Pearson

Although I’ve worked as a copywriter and editor for most of my career, I’ve always struggled to learn any language other than English. I still remember the humiliation at school as our French teacher walked between the desks, asking each of my classmates if they would continue studying French at a higher level. When she reached my desk, she stopped, looked at me, shook her head, and moved on. I wasn’t even invited to try.

Why start learning a language now?

I was utterly discouraged and assumed that I’d never learn to speak another language. However, when I turned 50 last year, something shifted. I felt a growing desire to connect to my roots: my great-grandparents came to England from Poland and Lithuania. Some of them were still alive when I was young; others I never met. But I wondered about them all, intrigued that we spoke different first languages.

This curiosity – amplified by a 50th birthday vow to try as many new things as possible – led me to download the Mondly by Pearson app and take my first tentative steps into learning Polish.

How Mondly by Pearson worked for me

I’m busy with work and my family but figured I could commit to five minutes a day to learn Polish, as Mondly by Pearson has short, manageable lessons. Although I can start them whenever I want, I find it works best when I stick to my daily ritual: I finish work, then I practice my five minutes of Polish, which also helps me make the mental switch into the evening.

I’m a gamer, so I appreciate that Mondly by Pearson is actually fun to use, with plenty of mini games and markers of my progress. Given the humiliation of French class, I also love learning in private and being able to practice my pronunciation without classmates snickering at my mistakes.

Using my new language in the real world

With my confidence and vocabulary steadily growing, I was excited to speak Polish for real. Coincidentally, my stepson had recently started dating a lovely Polish woman. I was delighted to meet her for the first time, and, to her surprise, confidently greeted her in Polish. Cześć! Mam na imię Hannah! – Hi, I’m Hannah!
Just five minutes’ practice a day with Mondly by Pearson is opening up a new world for me – and connecting me with the old world of my family.

What's helped me learn a new language?

Everyone's got different needs and preferences for learning, and this is what worked for me:

  • I like learning in private, so Mondly by Pearson was a better choice for me than joining a conversation class.
  • I told my Polish team-mate that I’m learning Polish: making a public commitment helps me stick to my goals.
  • I established my daily practice time: I find having a routine is essential in making a habit permanent.
  • I also make the sessions manageable: five minutes’ practice a day is easier to achieve – and leads to better progress – than an hour once a week
