So inside brackets we've got parentheses and then nine plus seven and parentheses squared divided by eight and bracket times two equals negative 64. Oh there's our X. X. And we want to recall from previous lessons our acronym PEM does which helps us recall the order of operations because whoa there are a lot of operations going on here. So we start with parentheses, we recall that brackets and parentheses both represent parentheses here. They just help us keep straight which are the ones we're working in. We look for the inner most parentheses and that here is this nine plus seven in parentheses. So we'll start with that. Nine plus seven is 16. Bring down the rest 16 squared divided by eight. All in brackets, times two equals negative 64 X. And so we're still working inside that bracket set of parentheses. And what do we do next in there? Well we've got exponents for R E in PEM does and we can do 16 squared that is 256. Bring down the rest divided by eight inside the brackets, times two times two equals negative 64 X. Still. And now we can finish off this parentheses we've got divided by eight. That is 32. We can get rid of the parentheses. Yay 32 times two equals negative 64 X. And now it's just we're done with exponents we're just multiplying times two we've got this left hand simplified that 64 equals negative 64 X. And we shift gears and we say how do we solve for X? How do we get X by itself? Well, the negative 64 is being multiplied by the X. How do we undo that we're going to divide will divide it by itself, divide by negative 64. What we do to one side we do to the other and now on the right hand side negative 64 divided by negative 64. Well that is just one. So on the right hand side we've got one X. Or X.
