This webinar shows how to use videos of physics experiments (from YouTube, prepared by the instructor, or taken by students) to engage students in active learning that resembles scientific practice. You’ll learn how to help students observe phenomena that are difficult to recreate with classroom apparatus or that happen too quickly or slowly. The videos don’t require explanations from the instructor: their goal is to engage students in collaborating on authentic problems. You’ll discover how to use them to help students collect data, find patterns, test ideas, and solve practical problems. This approach to videos is implemented in College Physics: Explore and Apply, by Etkina, Planinsic, and Van Heuvelen.

Professor Eugenia Etkina, Rutgers University
Eugenia Etkina, Distinguished Professor of Science Education at Rutgers University, Graduate School of Education, is a recipient of the Millikan medal (AAPT 2014). She has over 35 years of experience teaching physics at all levels, from middle school to university. She has published over 100 peer-refereed research papers and is lead author of College Physics: Explore and Apply, 2nd Edition. Etkina leads one of the United States’ largest programs in physics teacher preparation, and conducts professional development for physics teachers and university professors. She is co-inventor of the Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE) approach to teaching physics.
