Learn Physics by Doing Physics: An Introduction to ISLE for AP® Physics 1 & 2

What does it mean to help AP® Physics students learn physics by doing physics?

In this webinar, educators will explore the Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE)—a research‑based approach to teaching physics that aligns with the AP® Physics 1 & 2 Course and Exam Descriptions. ISLE engages students in observing phenomena, developing and testing models, using multiple representations, and refining ideas based on evidence.

The session will be led by Eugenia Etkina, lead author of College Physics: Explore and Apply and a leading researcher in physics education. Through classroom examples from AP® Physics 1 & 2 topics, participants will see how ISLE supports conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning, experimental design, and communication—skills assessed on the AP Exams and essential for success in college‑level physics, future STEM pathways, and career.

This webinar is designed for AP® Physics educators interested in instructional design and pedagogy that builds deep understanding and long‑term student readiness.

Eugenia Etkina is an Emerita Distinguished Professor at Rutgers at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. She holds a PhD in physics education from Moscow State Pedagogical University and has more than 35 years of experience teaching physics. She is a recipient of the 2014 Millikan Medal, awarded to educators who have made significant contributions to teaching physics, and is a fellow of the AAPT. Professor Etkina designed and now coordinates one of the largest programs in physics teacher preparation in the United States, conducts professional development for high school and university physics instructors, and participates in reforms to the undergraduate physics courses.
