MATs - How global learning can boost both teacher confidence and pupil engagement

View all tags

Global learning helps pupils acquire the skills to respond critically to questions about interdependence, development, globalisation and sustainability. It allows them to engage with what enables different individuals and communities to live together in mutual respect and tolerance.

Free global learning for KS2 and KS3 teachers

During this academic year, a well-established UK government programme delivered by a consortium of partners led by Pearson is offering to support the delivery of CPD in MATs. The Global Learning Programme includes funded₁ INSET training sessions, additional funded CPD from a range of approved providers, and free classroom resources to develop teacher confidence in the delivery of global learning. Carefully structured programmes of professional development across a school network can help MATs continued pursuit of teaching excellence.

Greater collaboration means staff are more likely to share in their trust’s singular mission and values, and that expected standards are achieved through teachers learning together.

What is the Global Learning Programme?

Over 7,250  schools are already registered with the Global Learning Programme (GLP), which is helping teachers, at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, improve their skills in delivering effective learning about development and global issues, and teach more confidently about our increasingly complex world.

Global competence will be assessed

At this time of renewed global uncertainty, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is implementing a new test to be included in the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). It assesses student ‘Global Competence’₂: ‘Global Competence' includes the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and understanding of global and intercultural issues; the ability to learn from and live with people from diverse backgrounds; and the attitudes and values necessary to interact respectfully with others. (Pupils in England will not currently participate in this year's global competences tests.)

How to register for free

MAT schools wanting to access the free support should register with the Global Learning Programme. A network of local advisors is also ready to respond to any request from MATs that would like to take up this offer of CPD support. Contact glp@pearson.com or call the GLP Helpline on 0844 372 2126.
