Pearson is turning the page on traditional tales with a new international writing competition, My Twist on a Tale. It will see fairy tales and folk stories reimagined as children and young people put a modern day twist on tales of old and create their own book of fantasies.
Launching on International Literacy Day (Sunday 8th September), this free competition will encourage 4-16 year-olds to tear up the rule book and give their own 21st Century take on classic fairy tales, fables and regional folk stories.
The stories should aim to celebrate a diverse and modern-day Britain. Whether it’s Cinderella meeting her not-so-evil stepmother, magical smartphones or classroom kingdoms, the key point is that children and young people get creative and put a personal twist on the tales by reflecting their own personality, location, heritage, interests and experiences. They could even create a fable or fairy tale of their very own.

Why take part?
At Pearson, we work to empower those working with children, young people and adult learners to explore the different dimensions of literacy, improve outcomes and inspire a life-long love of reading and writing.
Diversity, inclusion and relativity matter. They matter in the literature we consume and the books, poetry and plays we put in front of our children. We believe that at whatever age - from early stages to adulthood - people should feel represented in the literature they read and the stories they write.
The free competition: My Twist on a Tale, empowers children and young people to become the protagonist of their own stories as they assert their modern-day stamp on classic tales and create their own stories to reflect their personal interests, background and experiences.
While the winners will see their works published as a collection of short stories for all to read, we hope everyone who takes part enjoys finding their voice, expressing themselves freely and having fun along the way!
