Are you Making Waves?

The search is on for the teachers and schools transforming assessment…

In December 2017, Pearson and LKMco published ‘Testing the Water’, a report arguing that poor assessment practice was contributing to spiralling workload. It also revealed limited assessment literacy amongst many teachers and the threat this poses to teacher professionalism.

However, pockets of innovation are springing up, and this new project will identify the teachers, schools, organisations and countries that are ‘making waves’ in tackling these important challenges.

‘Making Waves’ is taking place in two stages, the first involving a crowdsourcing campaign coinciding with the start of the new academic year.

This will identify a pool of assessment innovations that tackle the challenges of the workload associated with assessment and which promise to increase teacher expertise in relation to assessment.

From October 2018, LKMco, with the assistance of expert steering group, will select approximately six of the most promising ideas from the pool of innovations.

Researchers will then spend a year seeing how the selected innovations are working in practice and see what can be learned. Alongside studying innovations in England, researchers will also explore international practices to see how policy makers around the world are tackling the same issues.

LKMco and Pearson are specifically looking for innovations that have recently been implemented, or which are on the cusp of being implemented by:

  • individual teachers;
  • individual schools;
  • groups of schools (such as Local Authorities, MATs and Teaching School Alliances)
  • countries or jurisdictions (e.g. states.)

Ideas can be submitted until the 28th October using this online form.
