Pearson and UCL awarded TIMSS Department of Education contract

Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, in collaboration with UCL Institute of Education (IOE), today announced it has been awarded the Trends in International Maths and Science (TIMSS) 2023 contract by the Department for Education to operate as the National Centre for England.

In total, around 60 countries and economies are expected to participate in TIMSS 2023, an international study which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by measuring the knowledge and skills of students in year 5 and year 9 in mathematics and science.

Pearson will operate as the National Centre for TIMSS 2023 meaning that it will be responsible for the implementation of the study in over 300 schools in England, with Associate Professor Grace Grima, Director of Research at Pearson, as National Research Co-Ordinator. The IOE will be responsible for the data analysis, writing of the national reports and the dissemination of the TIMSS 2023 results, under the leadership of Professor Mary Richardson and Associate Professor Jennie Golding.

In 2019, Pearson and IOE successfully delivered the previous cycle of the TIMSS study in England and will build upon this strong partnership when taking on the opportunity to deliver TIMSS 2023. Pearson has substantial expertise in delivering these types of international contracts and will leverage its extensive and comprehensive technology capabilities as well as its strong links with schools to ensure its successful implementation.

We plan to support enhanced appreciation and use of the very good TIMSS mathematics and science assessment items, as well as deepening understanding of relationships between contextual data and student performance.
