Myth busting series: Online tutoring doesn’t work
Our most recent research shows that when done well, online tutoring has a substantial impact on learner progress.
During the 2021/22 academic year, data revealed that students across England who used Pearson Tutoring saw a relative increase of 76% in assessment scores in Maths across Key Stage 2 and 4 and an average relative increase of 67% across all subjects and year groups.
What’s more, the statistics for pupil premium pupils were even higher with huge gains being made across all key stages and subjects, in particular an 80% improvement for Year 11 pupils and 90% improvement for Year 6 pupil premium pupils! With huge gains being made across all key stages and subjects!
Based on 93,000 hours of tutoring sessions in English, Maths or Science, almost 80,000 CUE (confidence, understanding and engagement) ratings were also collated, revealing even more impressive statistics with the average student scores of 77% for confidence, 77% for understanding and 86% for engagement! Furthermore, there were 180,000,000 words spoken in sessions between 2021-23, which is a strong indicator of just how engaged students were!
In addition, from a survey of over 2,200 teachers, tutors, students and parents, 87% of students found online tutoring to be more effective or as effective as the in-person alternative and 81% of teachers reported that they had seen a positive impact from external tuition. This statistic demonstrates just how valuable small group online tutoring can be as an alternative to face-to-face classroom style teaching.
These statistics are difficult to ignore and only reinforce what we already know, online tutoring sessions really do work! But don’t just take our word for it.
Adele Key, Deputy Headteacher and Year 6 teacher, Woodlea Primary School
“Tutoring has enabled me to tap into a vast number of highly qualified teachers to carry out the small group work that some of our pupils really need, without having to spend additional hours planning extra sessions for my children.
“With the ability to marry tutoring sessions with the concepts that are being taught in class, I have not only seen pupils’ academic abilities significantly improve but they have become more confident, resilient and assured learners too.”
Year 5 student
“Tutoring has helped me be more confident in English and maths and has taken away my worries that I am always ‘behind’. My tutoring sessions have made me realise that I can do it. My tutor teaches me in a fun way. I am more confident in class. I’m happy to put my hand up and answer questions and even help my friends when they get stuck. I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Year 10 student
“Tutoring has given me the confidence to go into my GCSE exam years without fear I was unsure at first but I’ve never looked back. My tutor helped me so much. I was able to question things so much more than I could in class. My level of understanding was beginning to soar! My tutor has helped me greatly in English. A subject I used to dread, I am now starting to enjoy!”
Parent
“Tutoring has given my daughter the confidence and courage to move forward in the subject areas that she felt she was struggling in. She was downbeat but her tutor has worked wonders. My daughter now has the confidence to ask questions and get things wrong, something she hated before. She has improved beyond my expectations. She is back to being the bubbly girl who loves learning.”
Alison Bradbury, Tutor
“Working with children individually or in small groups allows me to really get to know each one of them and personalise their learning in a way that can be more challenging for a teacher with 30 learners in one room. But tuition is not just about improving their academic abilities, in fact I would say a large proportion is about giving students the confidence to be wrong, to ask questions, to be brave enough to admit that they don’t understand, to ask for the help that they would never dare to in a class environment.
“We laugh together, have fun, get things wrong, work out how and why, where we can improve and learn to check our work, all taking place within a safe environment. Students make huge strides of progress, tutoring truly does make a difference.”
