Plotting Ahead... Diversity, inclusion and belonging

Our commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging in children’s literature

Diversity, inclusion and belonging matter. They matter in the literature we consume and the books, poetry and plays we put in front of our young people. The impact of this can last a lifetime.

Since 2020, Pearson has brought educators, learners, publishers and organisations together to discuss the existing lack of diversity, inclusion and belonging in children’s literature across the UK.

We want to identify what we should and could do to improve diversity in literature for children and young people across the UK – as individuals, as organisations and as a nation.

The story so far

Over the past few years, Pearson has been working with the sector to engage in crucial conversations around children’s literature, how to promote best practice and effect real change in this space.

In 2020, our inaugural Roundtable report not only stated the importance of diversity in literature but also recognised the role that organisations, like Pearson and others, must play to include all young readers.

We stated at that time our commitment to changes from within and the steps we want to take to create bias-free content that reflects the diversity of every learner.

Since then, the conversation has continued. In 2021, leading thinkers, practitioners, academics and pupils came together to build on those insights and lessons, further pushing the ongoing need for new, inclusive approaches to children’s literature.

In 2022, our third Roundtable outlined a series of requests for change to be endorsed by those working in, supporting and leading English and literacy.

In 2023 the story continues, with the publication of tangible, realistic approaches that could and should be implemented to effect national change now. Explore them below.
