Shaping the future of maths education together
Grounded in teacher, examiner and expert insight
Working with research partners, we have engaged maths teachers, examiners and subject experts through expert panels, workshops and focus groups.
This includes:
Focused discussions with GCSE teachers on accessibility, assessment structure and confidence building progression
A level Maths focus groups with teachers across the UK, exploring what is working well and where targeted improvements could strengthen the curriculum
Collaboration with leading statisticians and teachers to explore the future of data education, including the role of the Large Data Set in A level Maths and the development of meaningful data skills
Listening to students as well as teachers
Student perspectives are central to our research. Surveys with GCSE and A level students have explored their experiences of current curricula and assessments, how well qualifications support progression, and what they would value for future cohorts. Their views are helping to inform our thinking about how maths education can better prepare students for further study, employment and life beyond the classroom.
Making change workable in schools
Alongside curriculum and assessment design, our research is examining how clear communication, high quality exemplification and professional development can support schools to implement change clearly and sustainably. Our aim is not just to shape future qualifications, but to ensure that any change is practical, well supported and rooted in teachers’ day-to-day experience.
Preparing maths qualifications for the future
As part of our preparation for reform, we have been undertaking focused research into how maths qualifications can better meet the needs of students and the schools that teach them. This includes exploring how qualifications support progression, where unnecessary cognitive load can be reduced, and how curriculum and assessment models might evolve while maintaining validity, reliability and rigour.
