About our authors

David E. Bock dedicated 35 years to educating students at Ithaca High School. Throughout his career, he also taught Statistics at institutions such as Tompkins-Cortland Community College, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. Dave's exceptional teaching abilities have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching from the MAA (Mathematical Association of America) on two occasions and the Outstanding Educator Award from Cornell University three times. His commitment to excellence in teaching was further acknowledged when he became a finalist for the New York State Teacher of the Year.

Dave holds degrees from the University at Albany, including a B.A. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Statistics/Education. He has actively contributed to the AP^® Statistics community as a table leader and reader for the AP^® Statistics exam. Additionally, he has served as a Statistics consultant to the College Board, leading workshops and institutes for AP^® Statistics teachers. Dave's approach in writing his book is informed by his deep understanding of how students learn, ensuring that the content is presented in a way that maximizes student comprehension and engagement.

William B. Craine III is a dedicated mathematics teacher at Lansing High School in upstate New York, specializing in AP^® Statistics since 1999. Bill holds degrees in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at Oswego (B.S.) and the State University of New York at Cortland (M.S.). He further expanded his knowledge by earning a Master of Science Degree in Applied Statistics from the Rochester Institute of Technology. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Bill has contributed to the field of mathematics education by authoring various ancillary materials for textbooks written by Bock, Velleman, and De Veaux. Outside of the classroom and writing, Bill enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking with his wife Allie and their dog Prim. He also finds satisfaction in tackling minor home improvement projects and indulging in video games. Bill resides in Ithaca, NY.

Thomas J. Mariano brings 15 years of experience teaching mathematics and computer science at the secondary level. Throughout the past 14 years, he has played a vital role in the Greece Central School District in Rochester, NY, supporting instruction and data analysis across 17 schools. Tom has held various positions within the district, including Director K-12 Mathematics and Response to Intervention, middle school principal, and Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives and Instructional Technology. Tom's educational background includes a B.A. in Mathematics from Houghton College, an M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from SUNY Oswego, and additional graduate work at the University of Rochester. He holds New York State School District and Building Administration Certificates, further enhancing his expertise in educational leadership. In his personal life, Tom finds fulfillment in teaching at his church and enjoying long walks with his wife. He also stays engaged with his two adult sons and high-school-aged daughter.

Paul F. Velleman is a globally recognized figure in innovative Statistics education. His contributions include authoring and designing the multimedia Statistics program ActivStats, which earned him the prestigious EDUCOM Medal for innovative use of computers in teaching statistics and the ICTCM Award for Innovation in Using Technology in College Mathematics. Additionally, he created the acclaimed statistics program Data Desk and the Data and Story Library (DASL) website, which provides data sets for teaching Statistics. The tools referenced in this book for simulation and bootstrapping are also attributed to Paul's expertise in using and teaching with technology. Paul's teaching experience includes instructing Statistics at Cornell University, where he received the MacIntyre Award for Exemplary Teaching. He holds the title of Emeritus Professor of Statistical Science from Cornell and currently resides in Maine with his wife. Paul earned his A.B. in Mathematics and Social Science from Dartmouth College and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Princeton University, where he had the privilege of studying under John Tukey. His research primarily focuses on statistical graphics and data analysis methods. Paul co-authored the book ABCs of Exploratory Data Analysis with David Hoaglin. He is recognized as a Fellow of both the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Outside of his professional achievements, Paul is a proud father of two boys. In his free time, he enjoys singing with the acapella group VoXX and practicing tai chi.

Richard D. De Veaux is a highly esteemed educator and consultant with a global reputation. He has held teaching positions at prestigious institutions such as the Wharton School and the Princeton University School of Engineering, where he was honored with a Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching. Currently, he holds the C. Carlisle and M. Tippit Professorship in Statistics at Williams College, where he has been teaching since 1994. Dick's contributions to the field have been recognized with both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards from the American Society for Quality. As a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), Dick is highly regarded in the statistical community. In 2008, he was named Statistician of the Year by the Boston Chapter of the ASA. He has also served as the Vice-President of the ASA from 2018 to 2021. Dick's expertise extends beyond academia, as he has provided consulting services for renowned Fortune 500 companies including American Express, Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, DuPont, Pillsbury, General Electric, and Chemical Bank. Notably, his collaboration with Mickey Hart on the book Planet Drum has earned him the nickname "Official Statistician for the Grateful Dead." His real-world experiences and anecdotes greatly influence the content of this book. Dick holds degrees from Princeton University in Civil Engineering (B.S.E.) and Mathematics (A.B.), as well as from Stanford University in Dance Education (M.A.) and Statistics (Ph.D.). His research focuses on analyzing large data sets and data mining in both scientific and industrial contexts. In his leisure time, Dick enjoys cycling and swimming. He is the founder of the "Diminished Faculty," an a cappella Doo-Wop quartet at Williams College. He also sings bass in the college concert choir and with the Choeur Vittoria of Paris. Dick takes pride in being a father to four children.
