  • Provides unsurpassed hands-on practice to reinforce learning.
    • This book provides more exercises (and more types of exercises) than any other book.
    • Exercises are presented both within chapters and at the end of chapters to give students plenty of opportunities to practice what they have read.
    • UPDATED: The new Answer Key format allows instructors to use any exercise as a gradable homework assignment. While instructors have access to the full Answer Key, students can only view every other answer.
  • UPDATED: Supports visual learning through an extraordinary collection of vibrant images. Large, colorful, illustrations and photos bring medical language to life. This edition includes new and updated medically-realistic illustrations and medical photos that showcase real people in real healthcare settings.
  • Organizes content the way students want to learn and teachers want to teach. As 75% of instructors have requested, this book is organized around medical specialties, rather than body systems.
  • UPDATED: Provides opportunities for students to use medical terminology through realistic activities. Every chapter includes an activity that challenges students to analyze actual medical reports. This edition includes additional medical reports and end-of-chapter questions.
  • Links medical terminology to real healthcare careers. Career Focus Sections in every chapter introduce students to a healthcare practitioner who utilizes the medical terminology they have just learned.
  • Helps students master crucial word-building skills. Multiple features focus on teaching word building, including extensive coverage of analyzing combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes throughout each chapter. Enhancements to this edition include:
    • UPDATED: Review exercises that give students more practice with dividing and building medical words
    • NEW: Exercises that help students form the plurals and adjectives of medical nouns
    • NEW: Exercises that help students research the meaning of confusing sound-alike medical terms
    • UPDATED: Word part meanings are now alphabetized for easier memorization
  • Teaches crucial pathophysiology vocabulary visually, for more effective learning. Diseases are introduced with easy-to-understand visuals linking them directly to relevant terminology.
  • Organizes information consistently to facilitate learning. To promote student success, each chapter is organized into clearly defined, easy-to-read sections. Section enhancements include:
    • NEW: Numbered learning outcomes that focus students on their learning goals. To help instructors assign reading and homework, their numbers are correlated to all parts of the text and to all review exercises.
    • UPDATED: Abbreviations and drug names that reflect the latest terminology and medications.
  • Supports teaching and learning with interesting, readymade lecture materials. Instructors can supplement their lecture using a fully-loaded PowerPoint presentation system that includes a multitude of illustrations and photographs, animations, and embedded, real-life medical videos. Additionally, author-narrated Dynamic Lectures are available to accompany the PowerPoints—students in online courses will find these lectures particularly helpful.

About the Illustrator

The illustrations throughout this book were carefully coordinated through a close collaborative effort between the author and artist. Every figure was custom developed specifically for this book, and refined to be medically accurate, precise, unique, and fresh. From a pedagogical point of view, it was important that all of the art be consistent throughout, rather than presenting a conglomeration of styles and levels of detail.

Anita Impagliazzo is a medical illustrator and designer in Charlottesville, Virginia. A graduate of the University of Virginia, she went on to complete the Biomedical Illustration Graduate Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and spent several years specializing in illustrating for medical malpractice litigation. She has been self-employed since 2001, planning, creating, and collaborating on artwork for the University of Virginia Health System, for medical malpractice defense attorneys nationwide, and for multiple journals and textbooks (including the popular Martini Human Anatomy and Physiology series, and the revered Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations). She is a member of the Association of Medical Illustrators and has received several awards in its annual juried salons. She never tires of using medical language to learn new things about the human body: how it works, how it fails, how it is fixed, and how the fixing fails.
