Integrate theory and practice on multiple levels

Clinical Social Work Practice provides students with a method for integrating clinical theories and practice with diverse clients. This user-friendly book addresses assessment within a theoretical framework that considers the DSM-V and mental status exam. Diverse case studies are integrated throughout. The authors' clinical social work is presented authentically, describing successes as well as mistakes.

The 6th Edition includes a new chapter on the theoretical base for clinical social work practice, a revised chapter on trauma theory, a new chapter on special issues, and more.

Hallmark features of this title

  • Multiple theoretical perspectives include psychodynamic, transtheoretical, motivational, relational, cognitive, behavioral, and postmodern. Students will learn to distinguish theories and make connections between them.
  • Clinical learning tools, such as a step-by-step walkthrough of a clinical interview and a detailed biopsychosocial assessment, prepare students for clinical work.
  • Clinical examples help students conceptualize theoretical formulations and form diagnostic impressions based on the DSM-V and mental status exam.
  • Dialogue from work with real clients is presented along with clinical techniques.
  • Case discussions show both clients' and social workers' common struggles with change and the therapeutic process.

New and updated features of this title

  • NEW: Chapter on the theoretical base for clinical social work practice highlights the evolution of theoretical models, how to select a theoretical model to guide clinical practice, an understanding of evidence-based practice, the significance of the therapeutic relationship across theoretical models, and how to integrate theory and practice.
  • UPDATED: Chapter on trauma theory includes new sections on the neurobiology of trauma and traumatic memory; complex and collective trauma; trauma and substance abuse; trauma attachment and development; trauma resilience; and psychopharmacology and trauma treatment.
