A comprehensive look at multicultural education that balances theory with practical teaching strategies.

Comprehensive Multicultural Education uniquely blends diversity theory, history, and social science with sample lessons, cases, and real-world vignettes so that pre- and in-service teachers understand the what, why and how of multicultural education. It's a comprehensive framework of multicultural teaching and a teacher-tested curriculum development model.

The 9th Edition includes 3 new chapters on gender, poverty and special education so that today's teachers are better equipped to become informed, caring advocates for all students.

  • A comprehensive conceptual framework of multicultural teaching helps students focus their learning as they read and plan for teaching
  • NEW: The flexible four-part organization lets instructors assign reading in a way that matches their course.
  • UPDATED: A field-tested multicultural curriculum development model helps teachers implement a curriculum that aligns to school mission statements, social justice practices, and content standards
  • Case examples and real-world classroom vignettes in every chapter, as well as an appendix of lesson plans, help students connect theory with actual teaching practice.
Helps readers understand how important topics in history and social science affect education today
  • The historical background of major ethnic groups in the U.S. helps readers understand how current issues are rooted in history–and how educators must address that history to help all children develop their potential
  • The complexities of racial and ethnic group identities are explored so that teachers understand the issues to consider to make culturally competent decisions
  • UPDATED: Expanded discussions of race relations, White privilege, and anti-racism help teachers address racism, foster meaningful conversations, and incorporate key social justice practices in their own teaching

Helps readers understand how important topics in history and social science affect education today
  • Three new chapters delve deeper into topics of gender, class, and special education.
    • Ch. 11, "How Does Gender Make a Difference?," includes discussions on media and gender socialization; gender identity and development; the academic and social-psychological experiences of male and female students; the challenges and benefits of creating safe schools for LGBTQ students; and how to integrate gender equity into classroom instruction.
    • Ch. 12, "The Impact of Poverty on U.S. Children and Youth," examines the high levels and demographics of child poverty in the U.S; the causes and impacts of child poverty; the environmental conditions and challenges of teaching in high-poverty schools; and the strengths and limitations of Cooperative Team Learning in socio-economically diverse classrooms.
    • Ch. 13, "Special Education: The Challenges of Special Education in Inclusive Classrooms," examines how IDEA's principles, disability categories, and insufficient funding impact special education; the impact of special education’s identification categories; racial, cultural, gender, and socioeconomic disparities in special education; youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system; and the advantages and challenges of teaching in inclusive classrooms.
  • Expanded discussions of race relations, White privilege, and anti-racism help teachers address racism, foster meaningful conversations, and incorporate key social justice practices in their own teaching (Ch. 3: "Talking about Racism and Social Justice," "Anti-Racism and Teaching for Social Justice," and Figure 3.4, "Teaching for Social Justice").
  • An accessible overview of contemporary immigration includes new sections on immigration issues and anti-immigration policies, sentiment, and hate crimes (Ch. 5).
  • John Ogbu's discussion of "voluntary/involuntary immigrants” or "caste-like minorities" is covered in a new section, allowing readers to think about how perceived status or social barriers can impact academic achievement (Ch. 6: Box 6.3).
  • New Case Examples in Chapters 11 and 15 help students connect theory with actual teaching practice. The Chapter 11 Case Example exhibits social justice teaching practices in a challenging middle school, and the Chapter 15 Case Example demonstrates how the model can be used to integrate social justice and content standards
