A practical, step-by-step core research text

Balancing coverage of qualitative, quantitative and combined methods, Educational Research offers a truly inclusive and integrated overview of the processes involved in planning, conducting and evaluating research. It first examines the general steps in the research process and then details the procedures for conducting specific types of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies.

The 7th Edition features significantly expanded coverage of mixed methods design; new and updated research examples; new research design tables; and more.

Hallmark features of this title

  • Annotated research articles help students understand the structure of articles and the key issues to consider when evaluating the quality and the applicable scope of each piece of research.
  • Useful Information for Consumers of Research features offer tips on interpreting and evaluating research.
  • Checklists summarize key points such as evaluation criteria used to assess the quality of a study.
  • Useful Information for Producers of Research features present tips on planning and conducting research.

New and updated features of this title

  • UPDATED/NEW: Research examples showcase diversity, equity and inclusion and provide guidance on the importance of rhetoric and sensitive language in reporting. New analysis examples cover topics such as conducting multiple regression in SPSS.
  • NEW: Research design tables help the reader decide what research questions fit research problems and which designs are the best options.
  • UPDATED: Mixed Methods Design (Ch. 16) includes more emphasis on integration, updated terms and ethical considerations unique to mixed methods research. A new example article better reflects the state-of-the-art research methods presented.
  • UPDATED: Considerations for collecting quantitative and qualitative data include ethical considerations related to privacy, vulnerability, and institutional review boards in addition to the importance of collecting descriptive data about participants.
  • UPDATED: References reflect the 7th Edition of the APA Publication Manual as well as the newest thinking on research methods.

The LMS-Compatible Assessment Bank streamlines assignments and grading

  • NEW: Learning objective quizzes and application exercises are included in an LMS-compatible packaged file. Application exercises in each chapter use a short-answer format and issue a model response written by experts.

In 2008 he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to South Africa in 2008 and to Thailand in 2012. In 2011, he co-led a National Institute of Health working group on the “best practices of mixed methods research in the health sciences,” served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard’s School of Public Health and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In 2014, he was the founding President of the Mixed Methods International Research Association. In 2015, he joined the staff of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan to Co-Direct the Michigan Mixed Methods Program. In 2018, he co-authored the “standards” for qualitative and mixed methods research for the American Psychological Association.

Timothy C. Guetterman, PhD is an applied research methodologist specialized in general research design and mixed methods research. Tim is currently a faculty member and Associate Director of the Mixed Methods Program in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan. His methodological interest is to advance rigorous methods of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, particularly strategies for intersecting and integrating qualitative and quantitative research. He serves as a methodologist on research projects across disciplines. Much of his primary research is at the intersection of health and education. Through funded federal, foundation, and institution grants, he investigates informatics technology to improve equitable health communication, education, and assessment. Tim is also actively engaged in teaching, learning, and developing research methods capacity through foundation grants and NIH-funded projects.
