A learner-centered approach for today's students

Human Anatomy & Physiology speaks to the way today's students learn and study, bringing A&P to life with student-friendly writing and just-in-time coaching. The learner-centered approach uses art to guide students through complex A&P topics, one-concept-at-a-time, before bringing the parts together in a summarizing Big Picture figure.

The 2nd Edition provides coaching at the moment students need help, starting with the new Module 1.1: How To Succeed in Your Anatomy & Physiology Course. Questions focused on case studies and real-world scenarios allow students to practice and develop critical-thinking skills.

Hallmark features of this title

  • Apply What You Learned questions ask students to think critically and apply what they've just learned.
  • Core Principles and Bring it Back (Flashback) Questions reinforce recurring principles and previously learned concepts.
  • Recurring Core Principles icons remind students to recall and apply core principles introduced in Chapter 1, including structure, function, feedback loops, gradients and cell-to-cell communication.
  • Chapter Running Cases written by Erin Amerman correspond to each chapter and challenge students to apply their knowledge of key A&P concepts to a real-world clinical scenario.
  • Clinical Case Studies, Clinical Scenarios, and Nurses Need Physiology increase problem-solving skills and help prepare students for future careers in allied health.

New and updated features of this title

  • Concept Boosts anticipate where students need extra help and provide just-in-time coaching on key A&P concepts that are often difficult or tricky. They often incorporate familiar analogies and simple illustrations.
  • One-concept-at-a-time art focuses on teaching one concept per figure so that students can instantly grasp the key idea without being distracted by a sea of details. For key physiology concepts, unique sequence figures unpack information so that each scene contains only the most important information.
  • Big Picture Figures visually summarize key physiological processes and anatomy concepts, highlighting only what is most important.
  • A&P in the Real World boxes highlight clinical conditions and disorders that illustrate and apply key A&P concepts discussed in the chapter.

Features of Mastering A&P for the 2nd Edition; published 2018

  • GapFinder Diagnostic Modules assess prerequisite knowledge (study skills, foundational science and math concepts) and recommend GapFinder Study Modules with personalized remediation.
  • Practice Anatomy Lab (PAL) 4.0 is a virtual anatomy study and practice tool that provides students 24/7 access to the most widely used lab specimens including human cadaver, histology, cat, fetal pig, 3D and anatomical models. PAL 4.0 includes built-in audio pronunciations, mobile friendly flashcards, and multiple choice and fill-in-the blank lab practical quizzes. Questions with images from PAL can be assigned and automatically graded in the Mastering A&P Item Library.
  • PhysioEx 10.0 Laboratory Simulations in Physiology is a suite of over 60 easy-to-use laboratory simulation activities that complement or replace wet labs.

Features of Pearson eText for the 2nd Edition; published 2020

  • EXPANDED: Module 1.1 How to Succeed in Your Anatomy and Physiology Course coaches students on how to manage time, take notes, study for an A&P exam and use the Active Learning Workbook.
  • DOORS: Critical Thinking Framework in Module 1.1, created by Amerman, builds critical thinking tools.
  • 3 Study Skills Strategies appear in Concept Boosts, Study Boosts and end-of-chapter content: 1) Bring it Back (Flashback) Questions reinforce principles and learned concepts; 2) Space it Out recommends leaving time between Bring it Back (Flashback) sessions; 3) Mix it Up uses interleaving to help students apply knowledge and relate it to other topics.
  • 2 Big Picture Figures visually summarize key physiological processes and anatomy concepts, showing how the distinct parts work as a whole. 2 Big Picture Animations complement 2 Big Picture Figures and feature Amerman guiding students through complex concepts.

Erin Amerman teaches anatomy and physiology at Florida State College at Jacksonville; she has been involved in anatomy and physiology education for more than 17 years as an author and professor. She received a B.S. in cellular and molecular biology from the University of West Florida and a doctorate in podiatric medicine from Des Moines University. She is also the author of the best-selling Exploring Anatomy and Physiology in the Laboratory, now in its third edition, with Morton Publishing Company. Erin is deeply committed to helping her students succeed in the A&P course and to generating curiosity and excitement about the material and its application in their future health careers. She is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and enjoys attending the annual HAPS conferences, especially when they are in locations that have ample hiking opportunities and many different species of snake.

When not writing or teaching, Erin enjoys spending time with her family and her menagerie of rescued cats, dogs, cows, snakes, fish, and a turtle.
