Reference values, normal findings, descriptions, purpose(s), clinical problems, procedures, factors affecting results, nursing implications with rationales, and guidance on client teaching are all covered for each test.
  • Nearly every laboratory and diagnostic test that students will encounter—well over 420—can be found in this book.

    • New or rewritten information on 15 laboratory and diagnostic tests prepares student and practicing nurses to use and interpret the latest in the field, fully understand the nursing implications, and properly educate their patients.

      • Updated–Zika virus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody, arterial blood gases (ABGs), bladder cancer/tumor markers, diabetes mellitus autoantibodies, infertility screen, placental growth factor, pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A, and thyroid peroxidase (TPO).

      • Added–lung, lymph nodes, prostate gland, and thyroid biopsy; cardiac calcium scoring; D&C; and  electroneurography.

    • Significantly updated coverage of many additional tests—arterial blood gases (ABG), bilirubin tests, echocardiography (major revision), HIV (major revision), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear scan, positron emission tomography (PET), Pap smear, Pacemaker (major revision), and ultrasonography—provides the most current information about many of today's most widely used and important tests.

  • Carefully organized information assists students as they perform laboratory/diagnostic assessments of body functions. A full section is offered on using tests to assess cardiac function; respiratory function; renal function; liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic function; gastrointestinal function; neurologic and musculoskeletal function; endocrine function; reproductive function; arthritic, collagen, and infectious allergic conditions; shock; neoplastic conditions; and hematologic conditions.

    • Laboratory and diagnostic tests have been integrated by body function in Part 3. This pairs the 12 major body functions and their most common conditions, with the laboratory and diagnostic tests necessary for diagnosing a problem.

  • Practical information for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is provided. This includes extensive information on monitoring serum and urine to achieve and maintain therapeutic drug effects and prevent drug toxicity. It also covers the therapeutic ranges, peak times, and toxic levels of 120 drugs.

    • Expanded TDM coverage now includes drugs used for HIV monitoring.

  • Situational Study Questions, now found at the end of Part 1 and Part 2, help students apply the information just learned about laboratory and diagnostic testing. Students are presented with scenarios based on several common patient health problems—possible heart attack, heart failure, breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, colorectal cancer, peptic ulcer, pulmonary embolism, and more—and are then asked which tests should be considered and/or conducted.
