The world of microbiology and why it matters to human life

Exploring microbiology has never been more important, or more exciting. Using problem-based learning exercises and thought-provoking questions, Microbiology with Diseases by Body System helps students visualize the invisible and develop critical thinking. Author-created Video Tutors and Disease in Depth encourage understanding and exploration. A focus on clinical applications prepares students for future success in applied practice and healthcare careers.

The 6th Edition is updated throughout with the latest scientific and educational research and data available. It updates and adds new features, including Solve the Problem!, Before You Begin questions, and Micro Check questions. All case studies have been reviewed and revised for medical relevance and accuracy, and many other enhancements are found throughout.

Hallmark features of this title

  • Micro in the Clinic features engage students at the beginning of the chapter and throughout; each chapter concludes with Micro in the Clinic Follow-up.
  • Disease in Depth 2-page spreads are highly visual and feature illustrations, micrographs and infographics, with in-depth overviews of selected diseases for comprehensive study and review.
  • Clinical Case Study and Emerging Disease Case Study features discuss a patient's experience with a microbial disease and conclude with questions for the student.
  • End-of-Chapter Reviews include Concept Mapping exercises, Critical Thinking questions and Visualize It questions.

New and updated features of this title

Author bios

About our authors

Robert W. Bauman has been a professor of biology and past chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas. He has taught microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, and botany for over 35 years. In 2004, the students of Amarillo College selected Dr. Bauman as the recipient of the John F. Mead Faculty Excellence Award and he has been nominated yearly, but winning through the college limits to 1 time. He received an M.A. degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in biology from Stanford University.

His research interests have included the morphology and ecology of freshwater algae, the cell biology of marine algae (particularly the deposition of cell walls and intercellular communication), environmentally triggered chromogenesis in butterflies, and terrestrial oil pollution remediation by naturally occurring bacteria. He is a member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) where he has held national offices, Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA) where he has served in a statewide position of leadership, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and The Lepidopterists' Society. When he is not writing books, he enjoys spending time with his family: gardening, hiking, camping, restoring older homes, mentoring students, backpacking, cycling, skiing, and reading by a crackling fire in the winter and in a gently swaying hammock in the summer.

Todd Prim (contributor) is a professor at Sam Houston State University in the Department of Biological Sciences and former Director of the Teaching and Learning Center. In 2010, he was Distinguished Alumnus of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences of Baylor College of Medicine, where he earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry. He is active in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and received the ASM Texas Branch 2015 Faculty Teaching Award. He was chair of the 2013 ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators and currently serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education. He has received the Certificate of Effective College Instruction from the Association of College and University Educators and the American Council on Education and facilitates other faculty in earning that certification on his campus. Todd loves mentoring students and spending time with his wife of 31 years and their children and grandchild.

Christopher Thompson (contributor) is the Manager of National Training and Career Development Programs at Kennedy Krieger Institute, beginning in May 2024. He oversees training programs for child neurologists and brain/spinal cord injury specialists. Prior to this, he spent nearly 20 years teaching microbiology and cell biology, authoring multiple novel online microbiology learning aids, mentoring students in his immunology laboratory, and helping undergraduates navigate their career decisions.

He has won several mentoring awards at Loyola University Maryland, including the Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring and the AFFIRM Award. He served as President of the American Society for Microbiology - Maryland Branch in 2010 and was a Board Member from 2009-2012. Seven of his students have won ASM-MD Branch’s prestigious annual J. Howard Brown award for Best Undergraduate Research projects.

Christopher earned his Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Iowa and his bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Eastern Washington University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He loves fishing with his son and making gifts in his woodshop.
