A succinct, readable survey of criminal law

Principles of Criminal Law is a clear, efficient introduction to criminal law viewed through the lens of human behavior. Concise enough for a one-semester course, it provides critical background information, establishes elements of major crimes, and covers a vast range of crimes, including white-collar, victimless and political crimes, without dense citations or lengthy discussion.

The 7th Edition has new information on organized and white-collar crime, up-to-date marijuana laws, and additional content on specific crimes and legal rules. Cases and critical-thinking features challenge students to think critically about complex legal issues.

Hallmark features of this title

Clear, engaging presentation of key concepts

  • A narrative approach is used in place of the casebook perspective typical of law texts, keeping readers engaged.
  • The prevailing positions of settled issues are presented with only occasional reference to the majority/minority conflicts, addressing a common source of confusion for students.

Study aids and practical applications

  • Definitions, focus boxes and practicums simplify basic concepts within this often-confusing legal realm.
  • Short, edited cases in certain chapters demonstrate the real-world applications of key concepts.
  • Criminal law exercises help students apply the principles of criminal law to real situations.
  • How Would You Rule sections challenge students to decide how they would rule on a contested issue.
