TIMSS 2019 results

The results of the TIMSS 2019 study have been announced, as you may have seen, with Year 5 children in England scoring 10 points higher in maths than in 2015. This feels like a moment to say a big ‘congratulations!’ to all our Primary teachers, as well as the children themselves.

Teaching for mastery has been a journey for schools, with teachers and school leaders across the country thinking deeply about how they can best apply the key principles to raise standards in their setting. It’s great to see results improving after all this hard work.

While the results are positive, they also show a gender gap, with Y5 boys in England scoring 8 points higher than girls on average, and reporting higher levels of confidence: 39% of boys at this stage describe themselves as very confident in mathematics versus 24% of girls.

Power Maths
What can we do to build confidence in girls when it comes to maths?

We designed the mastery programme Power Maths with the growth mindset approach at its heart, to give all children the confidence to succeed in maths. There are four characters that model growth mindset attributes for children: they are brave, curious, determined and flexible.

There’s a lovely example from the Meadows School of children taking on these characteristics.

Have you been using the characters to inspire children in your school? We’d love to hear all about it if you have. What other ideas do you have in your school for inspiring girls to be confident mathematicians? Share your ideas on Twitter using hashtag #mathsadventures. Let’s see if we can keep up the progress in the 2023 study!
