In this session, we'll discuss best practices for utilizing qualitative and quantitative data in the classroom. Learning to "read" data and data visuals is a skill with which not all students in our classrooms have previously collected. But, charts, graphs, figures, and maps are common tools in sociological teaching and research. We’ll explore how to effectively use graphs, figures, maps, and charts to engage students.

Professor Tristan Bridges

Tristan Bridges is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Tristan's research and writing all revolve around issues of gender, sexuality, and inequality. He is co-author of the introductory textbook, Sociology NOW, Third Edition (Pearson, with Michael Kimmel and Amy Aronson) and co-editor of Exploring Masculinities: Identity, Inequality, Continuity, and Change (Oxford, with C.J. Pascoe). Tristan's research examines transformations in masculinity, gender and sexual relations. and inequality in the contemporary US. Toward this, Tristan has studied professional and amateur bodybuilders, fathers' rights activists, pro-feminist men, bar regulars, American couples with "man caves" in their homes, and more. Tristan also serves as Book Review Editor for the journal Men and Masculinities and has written extensively for public audiences, including popular press outlets like CNN.com, Huffington Post, Pacific Standard, and Quartz.com.
