College Completion: The Role of Math & Technology in the Classroom
Friday, March 15, 2019, 8:30 a.m.–9:15 a.m.
The goal of increasing college completion rates is common at universities and community colleges. Its priority is so great that state legislatures and even the federal government have set timelines and metrics. At the root of many completion initiatives are reforms to mathematics curriculum and instruction. Policy leaders and lawmakers are shaping what happens in the classroom, with both positive and negative effects. This session will explore issues surrounding completion, its impact, and how mathematics and technology factor into efforts to improve it. Attendees will learn more about the issues at hand and how they can play a role in improving a student's college experience–often times weaving in the use of technology–both in and out of the math classroom.
About Kathleen Almy
Kathleen Almy is a mathematics research associate for Northern Illinois University's Center for P-20 Engagement as well as the Illinois Director for Transitional Math. She leads projects for state agencies related to transitional and developmental math initiatives. Prior to joining the P-20 Center, she was a mathematics professor with 20 years of experience in high school and college classrooms. Her degrees include a B.S. in Mathematics Education from Southern Illinois University and an M.S. in Pure Mathematics from NIU. Kathleen is pursuing a doctorate in higher education with an emphasis on community college leadership. She is the co-author of Math Lit, a textbook designed to support developmental math pathways courses.

Transforming Institutional Practices by Redesigning Educational Frameworks in Collegiate Mathematics
Saturday, March 16, 2019, 8:00 a.m.–8:45 a.m.
This talk will engage participants to learn about redesigning educational frameworks in collegiate mathematics to make innovations in pedagogical practices that can help enhance student learning. Examples will include active learning spaces, evidence based teaching, experiential learning, project based learning, challenge based learning, digital innovations and learning by doing approaches. Participants will learn how a shared collaborative experience with efficient use of technology can help to advance mathematics teaching and learning in the 21st century.
About Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer
Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer is a tenured Professor of Mathematical Sciences at George Mason University and serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Science and the Director of COMPLETE (Center for Outreach in Mathematics Professional Learning and Educational Technology) at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. His research interests are in the broad areas of computational mathematics, scientific computing, computational biomechanics and STEM education. During the last decade, Dr. Seshaiyer initiated and directed a variety of educational programs including graduate and undergraduate research, K-12 outreach, teacher professional development, and enrichment programs to foster the interest of students and teachers in STEM at all levels. Dr. Seshaiyer contributed extensively to teaching and won several prestigious awards, including the President’s Excellence Award in Teaching which is the highest award for teaching offered at two different institutions, the faculty mentoring excellence award in 2013, the GMU Alumni Faculty of the Year in 2014 and also has been nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). Earn Digital Badges at ICTCM
Pearson is dedicated to providing the tools you need to achieve your professional goals. At ICTCM, you’ll develop new skills you can immediately put to use through sessions focused on integrating educational technology into your courses, and inspiring students in fresh ways.
A digital badge is a web-enabled version of a credential, certification, or learning outcome.
How is my credential displayed as a badge?
We partner with Acclaim, a badging platform backed by Pearson, to translate your demonstrated learning outcomes into a digital badge. Acclaim’s technology is based on the Open Badge standards defined by Mozilla and enables you to manage, share, and verify your credential digitally.
What are the benefits of a digital badge?
Representing your credential as a badge lets you share your abilities online in a way that is simple, trusted, and easily verified in real-time. Badges give employers and peers concrete evidence of what you had to do to do earn your credential—and what you’re now capable of.
Acclaim is a product of Pearson, the world’s leading learning company. Acclaim works with credible organizations to provide digital credentials to individuals.
Who is eligible to earn a ICTCM 2019 badge?
Badges are available to all ICTCM 2019 attendees, speakers, and award winners.
How will I know if I've earned a badge?
You’ll receive an email notification from Acclaim with instructions on how to claim your badge and set up your account for managing, sharing, and verifying your certification.
What if I don't want my credential to be public?
All information regarding you and your credentials can be easily configured in your Acclaim account. You’re in complete control of the information about yourself that’s made public.
Is there a fee to use Acclaim?
No. Using Acclaim to manage, share, and verify your credentials is free to badge earners.
How do I ensure my badges are secured and uniquely my own?
While badges are simply digital image files, they are uniquely linked to data hosted on the Acclaim platform. This link makes them more reliable and secure than a traditional, paper-based credential. It also eliminates the possibility of anyone claiming your credential and your associated identity.
How and where can I share my credential through Acclaim?
Every credential and profile on Acclaim has a unique URL that is sharable via email, on sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, or embeddable on a website or resume. You can also add your badge to an email signature.
What are labor market insights and how can I access them through Acclaim?
Labor market insights contain information pulled from active requisitions across the United States. Based on your skills, you can learn which employers are hiring, what job titles and salaries you might be qualified for, and more. To access this information, select any of the skill tags on your badges.
Will my Acclaim profile include badges that have been issued to me from other platforms?
No. Acclaim doesn’t support uploading badges issued by other platforms.
Can I export badges issued from Acclaim to other badge storing platforms?
Not at this time. The current open badge infrastructure standards do not allow for real-time verification of our badges outside the Acclaim platform, which is a main priority for ensuring verification. Acclaim is working with the open badge community on solutions for this issue.
I should have been issued a badge, but never received a notification email. How can I get my badge?
Contact Joanne Foster and be sure to add no-reply@youracclaim.com to your email’s safe sender list.
Where can I find support for the Acclaim platform?
Visit Acclaim’s Support page for more answers to frequently-asked questions.
