Talking with Elayn Martin-Gay transcript
I’m Elayn Martin-Gay and I taught for 25 years at the University of New Orleans;
I spent so many years at the University of New Orleans teaching students, who I
thought their main problem area was study skills, the lack of being organized, the lack of
asking questions, the lack of participating in class.
I thought a great way might be to provide some supplemental videos for students. And
so I started making videos, and they went well. So, if a student misses a class, they can
watch a video.
It's not the all in all. I can be number two. You can be number one. You're definitely
number one. You've got me as a consistent voice through text, and me as a consistent
voice through videos. So there's a consistent number two, and it really helped my
students out.
And that's when I started doing videos at University of New Orleans. My passing rate
greatly increased through the use of videos and notes that I was taking, which slowly
formed a text.
I think we all agree that there is throughout whatever course a student is taking there is
a definite lack of study skills.
Most importantly the skill of being organized. So I decided to make it easy for everyone
including students by creating a video notebook.
What's so cool about this video notebook? It goes one-to-one with my videos, and so a
student can watch one of my videos and just slowly take notes.
Everything's in proper order, according to how I presented it on a video. And when a
student is done with the video, they've got a set of notes they can use for that section.
