Answers to common questions about the National Tutoring Programme and Pearson as your NTP provider.
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) aims to support teachers and schools in providing a sustained response to the coronavirus pandemic and to provide a longer-term contribution to closing the attainment gap. As part of the programme, schools will be able to access subsidised high-quality tuition from an approved list of Tuition Partners.
For more information, go to the NTP website
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) will provide additional support to schools to help disadvantaged pupils whose education has been most affected by school closures.
The focus of the NTP is on supporting disadvantaged pupils, including those eligible for Pupil Premium funding. However, participating schools will be able to decide which of their pupils will most benefit from additional support, and which type of support is more suitable.
Any child at a disadvantage due to school closures is eligible, regardless of what grade they are aiming for.
Any state-maintained school in England is eligible to apply for tutoring.
We expect the majority of tutoring to be delivered in small groups (with one tutor and three pupils) to ensure that as many pupils as possible can benefit from our programme.
See the EEF website for more details on how tutoring in small groups can boost pupils' attainment.
Read our research on the benefits of small-group tutoring.
Schools can purchase one 15-hour subsidised block of tuition per pupil from a Tuition Partner.
As providers of qualifications and resources from ages 5-19, we are in a unique position to provide high-quality tuition from qualified teachers, using standardised lesson materials and assessments. We offer both in-person* and online delivery of tutoring, with the option of switching from in-person to online at short notice if required. All at 75% off the full cost.
We only work with fully qualified teachers, most of whom have extensive experience of marking GCSE or SATs papers.
Our tried-and-tested lesson materials and assessments are standardised to ensure high-quality delivery throughout.
We offer both in-person* and online delivery of tutoring, with the option of switching from in-person to online at short notice if required.
* In-person sessions will be delivered from January 2021, if government guidelines allow.
Schools will be able to decide whether to use tuition sessions in addition to their pupils’ normal school day, or during their timetabled day.
Typically, we would expect sessions to occur before or after school, or within the school day, rather than weekends.
Unfortunately, only state-maintained schools in England are eligible to purchase subsidised tutoring as part of the National Tutoring Programme.
Following feedback from schools and experts, we have chosen to support the core subjects at the key stages where we can provide qualified teachers who will have the greatest impact on a child’s learning.
